Neal Hill set a school record for rebounds in a game as the Chestnut Hill College men's basketball team dropped a hard fought game to Dominican University, 69-65 at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg, New York.
The Griffins fall to 5-15 overall and 4-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Chargers improve to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in league contests.
Hill grabbed 19 rebounds, breaking the old school record of 18 set by Dan Comas in February 2010. Sixteen of his 19 rebounds came off the defensive glass. The junior forward had nine rebounds in the first half and grabbed an additional ten in the second with the record breaker coming with four minutes remaining in the game. Hill also led the team with three assists.
Alejandro Redondo Cybak led four Griffin players in double figures with 18 points (8-11 FG).Â
Donald-James Imo and
Noah Charles added 13 points apiece while
Argel Pettit IV chipped in 12.
Cybak and Imo had seven rebounds apiece while Imo added three steals and three blocked shots on the afternoon.
Kamal Lee also had three assists.
The Griffins trailed for the first 30 minutes before battling back from a double-digit first half deficit to take a 53-51 lead midway through the second half. Two ties and three lead changes later the Chargers were back on top 57-56. The Griffins followed with eight straight points to take their biggest lead a 64-57 with 2:26 left with four different players producing points.
Dominican however came back strong, outscoring the Griffins 12-1 over the final 2:26 to pull out a four point win 69-65, making for a wild final five minutes of action with both team executing solid scoring runs in the process.
Just as Dominican ended the game with a big run, they started the game with one as well, jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the opening two minutes and led by as many as 11, 19-8 with 11:25 left in the half. Chestnut Hill clawed their way back within three with a 13-5 spurt as Cybak scored six and Pettit seven over the five-minute span of the run. Dominican again went back up by ten before ChestnutHhill trimmed the DUNY lead to six by halftime 37-31.
Javel Cherry led the Chargers with 18 points while Seth Sharif Brown chipped in 13. Isaiah Honis scored ten points.Â
For the game, the Griffins shot 46.3% (25-54) from the field while the Chargers shot 42.4% (28-66). Chestnut Hill had a 39-33 rebounding edge, but the Chargers took advantage of 20 CHC turnovers, scoring 25 points off the miscues. Dominican had 11 turnovers, leading to nine Chestnut Hill points.Â
 The men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, when they host Wilmington University in CACC south division contest. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
