Caleigh Edwards led four players in double figures with a career-high 24 points as the Chestnut Hill college women's Basketball team returned to conference play with an 84-61 win over Goldey-Beacom College Wednesday night at the Jones Center in Wilmington Delaware.
The Griffins improve to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games with the win. The Lightning fall to 0-3 in league play and 1-13 overall.
Edwards connected on eight of 16 shots from the field including a pair of three-point baskets and added six more points from the free throw line en route to her career-high 24 points. Â
Bridie McCann added 14 points while
Avery White and
Lindsey Lane chipped in 13 and 12 points respectively.Â
Lane, McCann and
Bri Rider led the team with seven rebounds apiece with Edwards also grabbing six boards. Edwards, a sophomore guard, also had four assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Rider led the team with three steals while Lane led all players with two blocked shots.
The Griffins opened the game with four three-point baskets in the first quarter, starting with White's long ball to start the scoring as Chestnut Hill took an 18-10 lead.Â
Kaitlyn Carter, Edwards and Rider also hit three-point baskets in the period.
McCann opened the second quarter with a traditional three-point play to push the Griffins lead to double digits, 21-10. The Lightning answered with eight straight points to cut the lead to 21-18 before Edwards broke the run with a put back with 3:38 left, starting an 15-1 run for the Griffins to close out the quarter with a 36-19 lead. Edwards scored eight of the Griffins 15 points during the run.
The Lightning opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run to trim the lead to single digits 36-27. Lane's layup snapped the scoring streak and started a 12-4 run to push the lead to 19, 50-31. The Griffins extended the lead to 21, 58-37 as the two teams headed into the fourth quarter.
Goldey-Beacom cut the lead to 18 on two occasions in the fourth quarter before the Griffins pulled away with an 84-61 win. Chestnut Hill shot 61.1% in the fourth quarter, the best mark of the game while scoring 26 points.
For the game, the Griffins connected on 30 of 69 shots from the field (43.5%) while holding the Lightning to a 34.6% (18-52) effort. CHC made eight three-point baskets to GBC's six while the Lightning outscored the Griffins on the free throw line 19-16. The Griffins dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Lightning 45-31, including a 16-7 advantage on the offensive glass. CHC outscored their opponent 28-7 in the second chance points category.
The women's basketball team will return to action on Saturday, January 6, 2024 when they host Felician University. Tipoff at Sorgenti Arena is set for 1:00 p.m.
