The Chestnut Hill College Men's Soccer team won their first conference game of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Dominican university of New York, 3-1 at Victory field in Lafayette Hill.
The Griffins improve to 2-5-4 overall and 1-3 2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference games. The Chargers fall to 2-7-1 overall and 1-4-1- in league play.
The Griffins got on the board early when Jose Riccardo Cuadra headed a shot into the net off a corner kick from Santi Linares, giving the home team a 1-0 lead just 6:23 into the game.
Nearly ten minutes later, Linares added a goal off a free kick from about 20-25 yards out to make the score 2-0. The lead stayed at 2-0 until the Chargers scored with 32 seconds left in the half to make the score 2-1.
Both teams battled for much of the second half until the 74th minute when Jimmy Paz pulled ahead of the field and delivered a strike past the Charger goalkeeper Joshua Kaandorp to make the score 3-1. Dane Bodziak assisted on the play.
The Chargers continued to put the pressure on the Griffins in the final 17 minutes, getting off four shots against Griffin keeper Rodrigo Artiga, two of which went wide and the other two Artiga made a spectacular save on to stop a score.
Artiga finished the game with six saves while allowing just the one goal. Kaandorp his counterpart in the opposite net made one save on the afternoon.
For the game, the Griffins had just seven total shots (four on net) while the Cougars took 20 shots (seven on net). Linares and Paz took two shots apiece to lead Chestnut Hill.
The men's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, with a game at Washington Adventist University. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
