Rally Falls Short as Griffins Fall to Chargers

A second half rally by the Chestnut Hill College Women's Soccer team fell short as Dominican University defeated the Griffins 5-3 Saturday morning at victory field in Lafayette Hill.

The Griffins fall to 2-6-1 overall and 2-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Chargers improve to 3-3 in league play and 5-5 overall.

The Chargers, on the strength of three goals and an assist by Jessie Maraia jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half as the Griffins struggled on offense and on defense.

Rebecca Dalton got the griffins on the board in the second half, with Virginia Perry getting the assist in the 60th minute.  Thirty seconds later, Abby Galazka fed Elizabeth Deal for her first goal of the season, cutting the Charger lead in half at 4-2.

Payton Lennon added an unassisted goal in the 74th minute following a corner kick as the Griffins closed within one, 4-3.  Chestnut Hill, who had peppered the Charger defense with 13 shots up to this point would manage just two for the remaining 16 minutes, a wide shot by Brigid McDonald in the 76th minute and a shot on goal by Galazka in the final four minutes.

The Chargers added their fifth goal of the game in the 83rd minute to complete the scoring as they hung on for the 5-3 win.

For the game, the Chargers took 14 shots with 12 of them landing on net.  The Griffins out shot DUNY with 21 shots but only had eight shots on goal in the game.

Ellie Stratz and Haley Esposito split time in net for Chestnut Hill with Stratz giving up the four goals in the first half and making two saves and Esposito the score in the second half while making four saves.

The women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, October 19, 2024, when they travel to the University of Bridgeport to take on the Purple Knights.  Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
