Griffins Down Saints as Zafiratos Earns First Win as Griffins' Head Coach

Three second half goals powered the Chestnut Hill College Men's Soccer team to a 3-0 win over D'Youville University Wednesday afternoon, giving Griffins Head Coach Jesse Zafiratos his first win as the mentor for the men's soccer program.

Chestnut Hill is now 1-5-4 on the season while D'Youville falls to 2-7-2.

The game was a wide open contest with both teams getting many opportunities to score.  The two teams combined for 17 shots in the first half as their respective defenses kept each other off the scoreboard.

The Griffins finally cracked the Saints defense in the second half when Jimmy Paz took a pass from Santi Linares who was driving down the right side and put it past Saints' goalkeeper Matthew Solorio for a 1-0 CHC lead in the 55th minute.

Six minutes later the Griffins struck again.  Amadeo Furano's shot was saved by Solorio and the rebound came right to Dane Bodziak who shot it in the net for a 2-0 lead

The Griffins final goal came in the 79th minute when Linares lofted a ball towards the middle of the box and Connor McGrogan head the ball past the right side of Solorio for the final score.

Rodrigo Artiga had 12 saves in net for the Griffins, keeping the team in the game while recording his fourth shutout of the season which ties him for the league lead.  Solorio had six saves.

D'Youville did out shoot the Griffins 22-17 (12-9 on net) and had nine corner kicks compared to CHC's two.

Bodziak had three shots on goal while Paz finished the game with two.

The men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, October 12, 2024 when they host Dominican University at victory field.  Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
