Bri Rider led four players in double figures as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team won their first game of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating Queens College 75-58 in their second game of the East Region Challenge at Sorgenti Arena in Philadelphia.
The Griffins are now 1-1 on the season with the win.
Rider connected on eight of 12 shots from the field en route to her career-high 17-point game. The senior small forward also led the team with seven rebounds. Kaya Mobley added 12 points (3-6 FG, 4-6 FT) and had a game high four steals. Rider and Mobley also had two blocks apiece.
Rounding out the double figure scorers for the Griffins were Caleigh Edwards and Avery White. Edwards filled the stat sheet with ten points, eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals. White also had ten points along with five assists, and four rebounds.
Four different played put points on the board in the first five minutes of action as the Griffins opened up an early 15-4 lead. Queens closed out the first quarter on a 13-4 run and pulled within two 19-17 as the quarter ended.
The Knights scored the first points of the second quarter, taking a brief 20-19 lead following a three-ball from Jalea Abrams. Mobley promptly put the Griffins back on top on their next possession with a three-pointer, 22-20, starting an 11-2 spurt that saw the Griffins increase the lead to eight 30-22. Chestnut Hill's lead was still eight with four minutes left when they exploded with a 10-2 run to close out the half and take a 44-28 lead into the locker room at the break. Edwards and Siobhan Boylan sank three-point baskets and CHC got two scores from Annie Jackson.
The Griffins increased the lead to their largest margin, 27 points as the third quarter progressed, scoring seven straight points in a 68-second span to lead 63-36 with 2:52 left. Queen's cut the lead to 21 with a pair of three pointers before the quarter ended.Â
A jumper from Bridie McCann with 6:18 left pushed CHC's lead back to 25, 67-42 before Queen's took advantage of a cold spell from the Griffins, outscoring their host 10-1 to pull within 16m 68-52 with 3:40 left in the game.
Queens would close the lead to 13 in the final minute before the Griffins scored the final four points to finish the scoring and earn a 75-58 win.
Abrams led the Knights with 19 points.
For the game, the Griffins shot 44.4% (28-63) from the field and a solid 47.4% (9-19) from three-point range. Queens was 18-54 from the field (33.3%) and 7-24  (29.2%) from three point range. The Knight's outrebounded the Griffins 43-37 but committed 11 more turnovers (28-17) as CHC outscored QC 28-10 in the points off turnovers category.
The Griffins return to action on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, when they travel to face Millersville University. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
