Griffins' Rally Falls Short Against Panthers

A fourth quarter rally fell short as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team dropped a 66-60 road contest at Adelphi University Saturday afternoon in Garden City, New York.

The Griffins fall to 1-3 with the loss the Panther improve to 3-1.

Bridie McCann led Chestnut Hill with 18 points (7-15 FG, 4-9 3FG).  Angela Sanders came off the bench to score 15 (7-11 FG).   Sanders also led the team with eight rebounds.  Bri Rider and Kaya Mobley added seven rebounds apiece while McCann chipped in six.  Mobley led the team with eight assists and Avery White added five.

Trailing by 11 heading into the fourth quarter, the Griffins used an 11-2 spurt in the first five minutes to close within two, 58-56, getting five points from McCann, baskets from Sanders and Rider and a pair of free throws from Tiayo Adelekan.

Following a defensive stop the Griffins extended the run to 13-2 as Rider put in a layup to tie the score at 58-58 with 3:34 left.  The Panthers scored the next four points to lead 62-58 before Sander's layup with 36 seconds left cut the deficit to two.  Adelphi sank four free throws in the final 13 seconds to seal the six point win.

The Griffins played from behind for much of the game as the Panthers jumped out to a 14-0 lead, holding the Griffins without a field goal until Adelekan's layup with 2:51 left in the first quarter, making the score 18-4.  McCann scored the final five points of the period to pull CHC within 12, 23-11.

The Panther maintained a double-digit lead until late in the second quarter.  A basket by Sanders cut the lead to single digits with 1:05 left and Siobhan Boylan added a three-point bucket with 24 seconds to pull the Griffins within six.  AU added a three-all in the final seconds to lead by nine at the half 35-26.

An 11-0 run by the Griffins to start the third quarter gave Chestnut Hill their only lead of the game 37-35.  McCann made two three point baskets and Rider had one of her won to highlight the run.  Adelphia countered with 15 straight points to push their lead ack to double digits 50-37 midway through the quarter.  A three pointer from Sanders broke the run and the Panther lead oscillated between nine and 11 over the final four minutes with the Panthers taking the 11-point lead into the final quarter.

Isabella Ascencio led AU with 18 points while Rolanda Robinson added 16.  Kaitlyn O'Connell  had 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
