Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

A Dominant Second Quarter Leads to a double-digit victory for Griffins

A strong second quarter propelled the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team to a 65-47 win over West Chester University Sunday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.

The win by the Griffins was only the second in program history against the golden Rams and the first since November 2021, when Chestnut Hill beat West Chester 80-68 at WCU's Hollinger field House.  The Griffins improve to 5-7 overall while West Chester falls to 3-7.

Bridie McCann led the Griffins with 20 points (7-15 FG, 5-11 3FG).  Kaya Mobley and Tiayo Adelekan added eight points apiece.  Caleigh Edwards and Siobhan Boylan led the team with eight rebounds apiece while McCann contributed seven.  Eight different players recorded at least one assist with Tikyra Miller leading the way with three.  Sara Tamoun had two steals while Bri Rider had two blocks.

The lead changed four times in the first 16 minutes of action with neither team leading by more than three points.  The Golden Rams led by one 18-17 with 3:55 left in the first quarter when the Griffins went on an 11-0 uprising to take a 28-18 lead at halftime.  McCann started the run with her second three-point basket of the game and after baskets from Boylan and Avery White, added a free throw.  Edwards capped the run with a three point basket with just two seconds remaining.

An 11-5 run in the first six minutes of the third quarter increased Chestnut Hill's lead to 16, 39-23, with McCann and Rider producing nine of the 11 points in the run. McCann sank her third three-point basket of the game during the run, giving her 100 for her career, becoming the tenth player in program history to record 100 or more career three-point baskets.  A three point basket from WCU's Alaina Hopta broke the run but the CHC's Angel Sanders answered back with her own three point basket to keep the lead at 16. West Chester closed the quarter with a 6-1 run to pull within 11, 45-34 heading into the final quarter.

Nine straight points from the Griffins to start the fourth quarter gave the hosts their biggest lead of the game, 54-34 with 7:40 remaining.  McCann started the action with another three-ball before Mobley drove for two layup and was fouled both times, completing the and-one on both occasions to complete the run. West Chester would only come as close as 15 the rest of the way as the Griffins held the Golden Rams to just four field goals over the final 7:40 to secure the 18-point win.

Michelle Kozicki led the Golden Rams with 20 points, including the 1,000th of her career.  Anna McTamney added ten points and ten rebounds.

For the game, the Griffins held the golden Rams to just 29% shooting (18-62) from the field while making 37.9% of their shots (25-66).  CHC made twice as many three point baskets (8-4) and outrebounded the Golden Rams 45-41 with eight different players grabbing at least three rebounds in the game.  The Griffins committed just nine turnovers in the contest, their lowest total in a game in 2024-25.

The women's basketball team takes a break for the Christmas holiday and will be back in action at Shippensburg university on December 31, 2024.  Tipoff for the game is set for 2:00 p.m.
