Women's Basketball Team Honors Seniors as Griffins Defeat Bears

Four players scored in double figures as the Chestnut Hill college women's Basketball team got back on the winning track with a 81-66 win over Bloomfield College Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins improve to 16-7 overall and 10-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Bears fall to 5-18 overall and 3-10 in league play.

Prior to the game the Griffins honored their senior players and managers in a brief ceremony.  Senior guard Kaitlyn Carter and senior forward Lindsey Lane were honored along with senior managers Ahzayah Lunsford-Ellis and Destiny Matthews.

Lane and Carter have been an integral part of the Griffins success over the past four seasons with both players providing solid contributions on and off the court.  The two players both rank in the Griffins' top 20 all time in several different statistical categories. Lunsford-Ellis and Matthews have been an integral part of the program behind the scenes over the seasons with assisting in practices and games.

Carter finished the game as one of the four Griffin players to reach double figures scoring ten points. (5-7 FG) She also filled the stat sheet with a team-high nine rebounds, along with four assists, two blocks and two steals.

Caleigh Edwards led the Griffins with 18 points (8-11 FG) while grabbing seven rebounds.  Avery White added 14 points and had a game-high six assists.  Bridie McCann rounded out the Griffins' double figure scorers with 12 points (5-9 FG).

The two teams played it close throughout the first twenty minutes with the Griffins holding a 40-35 lead at halftime. The Bears took advantage of 15 offensive rebounds in the first half, outscoring the Griffins 12-4 in second chance points in the two periods.

Chestnut Hill changed that in the second half, holding the Bears without a single offensive rebound for the final two quarters while expanding their five-point advantage.

The Griffins scored the first nine points of the third quarter to take control of the contest with a double digit lead 49-35 and maintained the double digit lead the rest of the way.

In the fourth quarter a layup from Lane (8 points) and two free throws from Sara Tamoun (7 points) gave the Griffins their biggest lead, 19 points 77-58 with 4:12 remaining before cruising to the 15 point win.

For the game, the Griffins shot 47.8% for the game, making 32 of 67 shots from the field.  Bloomfield shot 40.9% (27-66).  Bloomfield outrebounded Chestnut Hill 39-35.  Chestnut Hill meanwhile built a nice assist/turnover ratio 21/10 while the Bears committed 17 turnovers on the afternoon.
