The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team opened their 2024 season Friday afternoon with a single game against the University of New Haven at the Northeast Challenge held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the Ripken Experience Baseball Complex. New Haven came away with a 6-1 victory scoring four times in the final three innings.
The game was the season opener for both teams. The Griffins and the Chargers were originally supposed to play two games on Friday but that got reduced to one due to inclement weather.
Griffin starter
Jake Schweiker pitched a strong five innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out three. Despite his effort he was tagged with the loss.
Freshman
Mike Pascoe recorded a single in his first collegiate at-bat and finished the game with four hits, including a double and a triple.
R.J. Huth drove in the Griffins' only run with a single in the ninth inning.
Trailing 6-0 heading into their final at-bat, the Griffins led off with back-to-back singles from
Alex Fascia and
John Crane before Huth delivered his RBI single.
Phoenix Bowman got hit by a pitch to load the bases before UNH relief pitcher Dan Silverman came in to retire the next three batters to end the game, leaving all three CHC runners stranded and earn the save.
Liam Carroll earned the win for the Chragers, pitching five shutout innings, allowing six hits and striking out six.
The Griffins had threatened to score twice earlier in the game, loading the bases with one out in both the bottom half of the first and again in the sixth, but left all runners stranded both times.
The Griffins return to action on Saturday February 24, 2024, with a doubleheader against #15 Molloy University in Myrtle Beach. Originally only one game was to be played against the Lions, but a second one was added to replace the game lost on Friday due to weather. First pitch in the opening game is set for 10:00 a.m.
