Griffins Swept by Dolphins in Season Opener

The Chestnut Hill College Softball team opened their season Monday afternoon with a doubleheader at the College of Staten Island, dropping both games to the Dolphins, 3-2 and 10-2.

The Griffins are 0-2 to start the season while the Dolphins improve to 2-1.

Miana Lopez Del Haro drove in all four Griffin runs on the afternoon with a triple in the opener and a double in game two. She finished the day with four hits.

Camille Dunham had five hits in the two games with a two-hit effort in the opener and three more in game two.  Anastasia Watson had a hit in each game, including a double in the opener.

Gabriella Quinones took the loss in the first game striking out three in six innings of work.  Michelle Baker took the loss in game two with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched.

In the opener, Staten Island scored single runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-0 lead before the Griffins got on the board in the seventh.  Maya Preston and Dunham dropped bunt singles with one out to put two runners on.  Lopez Del Haro then took a 2-1 pitch and smacked the ball down the right field line for a triple, clearing the bases and making the score 3-2.  With DelHaro on third, the Griffins had the tying run just 60 feet away but were unable to advance her home as the Dolphins hung on for the win.

In game two, CSI got a two-run home run from Vicki Whalen in the first inning and banged out five hits in the second as the jumped out to a 7-0 lead.  Preston drew a two-out walk for the Griffins in the third and Dunham followed with a single before DeHaro launched her second extra-base hit of the afternoon, this one a double into left field to score both CHC runners and make the score 7-2.

The Dolphins closed out the game with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to complete the five-inning 10-2 win.

The softball team next takes the field in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as they start their spring break trip with games against Malone and Pikeville on March 3, 2024.
