Solid production from the top of the batting order led to three big innings for the Chestnut Hill college Baseball team as they opened their three-game home series with West Virginia Wesleyan university with a 13-6 win at the Ramp Athletic complex in Northeast Philadelphia on Saturday.
The Griffins improve to 3-6 overall while the bobcats drop to 3-5.
The top of the Griffins' order (
R.J. Huth, Aiden Myers and
Michael Pascoe)Â combined for nine hits and eight RBI on the afternoon to make a winner out of start
Jake Schweiker.  Schweiker tossed six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out two.
The Griffins' first big inning was the second inning, when the team jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Four straight walks produced CHC's first run of the game. Huth followed with an RBI single, and Myers followed with the first of his four RBI with an infield hit. Pascoe brought home the fourth run with a sacrifice fly.
The Bobcats quickly tied the score in the third inning, stringing together five hits to produce four runs.
Myers drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth with an infield groundout.
Christian Peluso started a three-run scoring burst in the fifth with a one-out double, scoring
Justin Geiger (single) and
Andrew Sawarynski (walk). Two batters later Huth delivered a single to score Peluso and give the Griffins an 8-4 lead.
West Virginia Wesleyan added a run in the sixth to make the score 8-5 before the Griffins had their biggest inning of the day, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring five times to take a 13-5 lead.
Peluso walked to start the inning and
Dan Ciotti delivered a bunt single. Huth's sacrifice bunt put both runners into scoring position for Myers who doubled into right field to bring home Peluso and Ciotti. Pascoe followed with a double to score Myers and two walks followed to load the bases. Pinch hitter
David Antone was hit by a pitch to score Myers and
Phoenix Bowman followed with a hard hit infield single to score
Bobby Sabatino who drew a walk earlier in the inning, giving the Griffins a 13-5 lead.
An unearned run in the top of the ninth by the Bobcats rounded out the scoring.
The baseball team will conclude their series with the bobcats on Sunday, March 10, 2024, with a doubleheader at Ramp. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
