Balanced scoring and a relentless defensive effort propelled the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship game for the first time in program history as they defeated Goldey-Beacom college 66-48 in the tournament semi finals held at Caldwell University in Caldwell, New Jersey.
The Griffins improve to 20-8 overall, reaching the 20 win plateau for the second time in three-seasons. The Lightning finish their season at 8-22.
Chestnut Hill will face top seed Jefferson University on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. in Caldwell's Newman Center.
Avery White led all scorers with 16 points while
Caleigh Edwards joined her in double figures with ten. Five additional players on the Griffins squad also scored six or more points.
Bridie McCann (eight points) and
Kaitlyn Carter (seven points) led the team with seven rebounds apiece. Carter also had two blocks on the night.
The Griffins led this one wire-to-wire, scoring the first 11 points of the game and never looking back.
Emily Sekerak had five of the first 11 points and finished the quarter scoring seven of her nine total points in the opening period as the Griffins led 20-12.
Lindsey Lane (eight points) scored four of those eight in the first quarter.
The Lightning closed within five in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but the Griffins quickly pushed the lead back to double digits with an 18-5 outburst to lead 38-20 before GBC's Rory Ciszkowski sand a three point basket in the final minute to make the score 38-23.
Caraline Herb scored all six of her points in the second quarter, shooting a perfect 3-3 from the field.
The third quarter was the only period that the Lightning outscored the Griffins and they did so with a slim margin of one, 10-9.
White scored ten of her 16 points in the fourth quarter and was the catalyst of a 7-1 opening run to push the Griffins' lead to its biggest margin 20 points at 54-34. Goldey-Beacom would come no closer than 16 the rest of the way as the Griffins made eight free throws in the final five minutes to seal the win, with White connecting on four of them.
For the game, the Griffins shot 44.6% (25-56) while holding the Lightning to a 30.8% (16-52) effort. Chestnut Hill (15-9 on the offensive glass). The Griffins also outscored the Lightning in the paint 34-14.
