Griffins Rally to Defeat Lions in Regular Season Finale

Four players reached double figures as the Chestnut Hill College women's Basketball team rallied to defeat Georgian Court University, 74-63 at the GCU Wellness Center in Lakewood New Jersey in their final regular season home game.

The Griffins improve to 18-8 overall and finish conference play with a 12-4 record.  Chestnut Hill finishes second in their division and will host a quarterfinal Central Atlantic Collegiate conference tournament game.

The women's basketball team, as the #2 seed in the CACC South Division will host #3 seed Dominican University on Tuesday, March 5 at 6:00 p.m. in Sorgenti Arena.
Bridie McCann and Avery White led the Griffins with 18 points apiece.  McCann shot 7-for-15 from the field and registered two three-point field goals, marking the tenth straight game of making two or more 'threes'.  White scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half, overcoming some shooting struggles to make six of ten shots in the final two periods. 

Emily Sekerak scored all 11 of her points in the second half (7-8 FT) while Sara Tamoun came off the bench to score ten points (4-7 FG).  Sekerak and Bri Rider led a well-balanced rebounding effort for the Griffins, grabbing six boards apiece.  Lindsey Lane pulled down five and three other Griffin players grabbed four rebounds apiece.  White led the team with four assists and a career-high six steals.  White has had at least one steal in 25 of the Griffins 26 games this season and  her six steals are the most by a Griffins player since Mary Trossi tied the school record with seven in February 2017.

Chestnut Hill trailed by eight points midway through the second quarter and used a 9-0 run to a 23-22 lead.  The Lions went back up by five late in the second half before a Caraline Herb three-pointer pulled the Griffins within two 32-30 at the half.

Georgian Court still led by one, 41-40 with 5:34 left in the third quarter when Chestnut Hill exploded with a 15-5 uprising to take a nine point lead 55-46 into the fourth quarter. White started the run and McCann followed with a three-pointer.  Tamoun made it seven straight points with a layup before GCU broke the string with a three-pointer.
Sekerak added two free throws and Caleigh Edwards, McCann and White closed out the quarter with baskets.  White opened the fourth quarter with two free throws to give the Griffins a double digit lead. 57-46.

The Lions roared back with an 8-1 spurt to pull within four 58-54 with 6:34 remaining in the game before two straight baskets from White put the Griffins back up by eight 62-54.  GCU clawed back within three on two occasions, the last at 64-61 with 3:30 left before the Griffins made their final run, a 10-2 spurt to finish the game with a double digit advantage, 74-63.

Safiatu Kolliegbo led the Lions with 19 points and nine steals.  Imani Gillette had ten points and ten rebounds.

For the game, the Lions had a slightly better shooting percentage (44.3%, 27-61) than the Griffins (43.8% - 28-64).  Where the Griffins held a big advantage on the free throw line, making 15 of 18 (83.3%) while limiting the Lions trips to the charity stripe by committing only ten fouls.  GCU went 5-11 from the free throw line (45.5%).  The Griffins also held a 39-36 rebound advantage and took advantage of 28 GCU turnovers, outscoring the Lions 29-13 in the points off turnovers category.
