Griffins Earn First CACC Win of Season; Tie School Record with 19 Hits in Game Two

The Chestnut Hill College Softball team won their first conference game of the season, defeating Post University 10-9  Wednesday afternoon in Waterbury, Connecticut.

The win earns the Griffins a split of their two game series as the Eagles edged the Griffins 4-3 in the opening game.   Chestnut Hill is now 1-13 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games and 2-20 overall.

The Griffins also tied a 16-year old school record with 19 hits in the game, equaling the mark set against Lincoln University in 2008.  Eight of the nine batters in the lineup had at least one hit with the top six in the batting order getting multiple hits apiece.  Mianna Lopez Del Haro had a career best four hits, including her third home run of the season.  Anastasia Watson also had a career best four-hit game. Kayla Rolon added three hits.  Watson, Maya Kemper and Amaris Guzman had two RBI apiece.

Gabriella Quinones picked up her first win of the season allowing nine runs (four earned) on eight hits while striking out three.

Chestnut Hill sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning with Camille Dunham leading off the game with a double to right field.  Dunham scored two batters later on Skyler Cunningham's infield single.  Consecutive singles by Watson, Rolon and Guzman plated three more runs.  Rolon scored the Griffins' fifth run of the inning two batters later on an infield groundout off the bat of Jasmine Ramirez.

Six more hits and a Post error in the second inning led to four more Griffin runs as they sent 10 batters to the plate.   Lopez Del Haro scored when Watson reached base on a throwing error.  Two batters later Guzman had her second RBI of the afternoon with an infield single scoring Cunningham.  Kemper followed with a long single to center field scoring two more runs  and giving the Griffins a 9-0 lead.

Post began to chip away at the lead with one run in the second, two more in the third and another run in the fourth to cut the lead to 9-4.

In the fifth,  Lopez Del Haro launched a long fly ball over the center field fence for her third home run of the season and a 10-4 CHC lead.

The score remained 10-4 until the Eagles  put together late rally in their final at-bat.  The Eagles' first four batters reached base to plate their first run of the inning and scored their second run of the inning on a fielder's choice to make the score 10-6 with one out.  Two batters later, the Eagles picked up two more runs with a two-out single and added their ninth run on a passed ball.  Quinones then got Jenny Riquelme to fly out to Guzman in left field to end the game.

In the opener, Lopez Del Haro had a double and a triple and two RBI but a late rally from the Griffins fell short as the Eagles pulled out a 4-3 win.

Watson also had a RBI double in the game. Michelle Baker took the loss allowing four runs on nine hits.

The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Lopez Del Haro got the Griffins on the board in the fourth, lacing a double to right center field to score Dunham who led off the inning with a single.  The Eagles then took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Lopez Del Haro tripled in the sixth to again score Dunham who had reached on an error to make the score 4-2.  In Chestnut Hill's final at-bat, Jenn Pokropinski singled to lead off the inning and scored on Watson's ground rule double before the Eagles got the final two outs to preserve the win.

The softball team returns to action on Saturday, April 13, 2024 when they host Dominican University in a CACC doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
