Cougars Complete Sweep of Griffins with Extra Inning Win

The Chestnut Hill College Softball team battled with Caldwell University Monday afternoon as the two teams went into extra innings in the second game before Caldwell scored four times in the ninth inning to earn a 5-1 win and complete a two game sweep.

The Cougars won the opener 9-1, scoring six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the win.

The Griffins fall to 2-21 overall and 1-14 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games.  The Cougars improve to 20-16 overall and 8-8 in league play.

Six different Griffins had hits in game two, all singles.  Chestnut Hill scored in the first inning after Camille Dunham reached on an error and later scored on Skyler Cunningham's infield groundout.

The Griffins maintained the 1-0 lead until the Cougars scored in the fifth inning, tying the score at 1-1.

Chestnut Hill threatened to score in the seventh putting a runner on base with one out before a Cougar double play ended the threat and sent the game into extra innings.  The Griffins also put two runners on in the eighth but failed to score.

Caldwell then scored four times in the ninth inning getting an infield single and a pair of doubles.  Now trailing 5-1 the Griffins advanced the courtesy runner to third in their final at-bat but failed to score as the Cougars completed the sweep.

Kayla Rolon had three of the Griffins' eight hits in the opener including a pair of doubles.  Dunham added a first inning triple but was left stranded on the base.

Rolon led off the second inning with a double and scored on Jenn Pokropinski's single to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.

Caldwell scored twice in the third and once more in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.  Four runs in the fifth put the Cougars ahead 7-1 before they added two more in the sixth.

Rolon had her second double of the game leading off the sixth and made it as far as third base before the Cougars shut the door and closed out the eight-run rule win.

The softball team is back in action on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, when they host Division I Delaware State University.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
