The Chestnut Hill College Baseball took advantage of the wind blowing out Saturday afternoon as they hit four home runs in the second game of their doubleheader with Wilmington University. The wind, however, also worked to the Wildcats advantage as they hit three of their own as they rallied to defeat the Griffins 12-9 to complete the two game sweep.
Wilmington scored four runs in the final two innings of the opener to pull out a 7-4 win to start the day.
The Griffins are now 10-24 overall and 4-11 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Wildcats up their record to 18-13 overall and 7-5 in league play.
The Griffins got solo home runs from
R.J. Huth, Phoenix Bowman, John Crane and
Christian Peluso. Wilmington had two two-run home runs (A.J. Tropiano and Tyler Pirrung) and a solo home run (Sean Glatts).
Bowman, Crane and Peluso each drove in two runs for the Griffins with Crane and Peluso both adding a single to go along with their home runs.
Aiden Myers also had two hits in the game.
A two-out infield error by the Griffins in the sixth inning of the nightcap brought home Wilmington's ninth and tenth runs, giving the visitors the lead for good, 10-8 and capping off a six run inning.
The Griffins had entered the inning with an 8-4 lead. Huth led off the game for Chestnut Hill by taking the first pitch and parking it over the left centerfield fence to tie the game at 1-1. The Griffins went on to score four more times in the first inning to hold a 5-1lead.
Wilmington got one back in the second inning before Peluso push the lead back to four runs with his solo home run in the third. Two innings later, the wildcats cut the lead to two 6-4 on Tropiano's two run blast.
Bowman and Crane hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with give Chestnut Hill an 8-4 lead before the Wildcats rallied to take the lead in the sixth inning.
The Wildcats added two more in the seventh inning to lead 12-8 while the Griffins scored one more run in their final at-bat to make the final score 12-9.

In the opener the Griffins got two hits apiece from Myers, Bowman and
Shawn LeVan with LeVan driving in two of the Griffins' four runs in the 7-4 loss.
A sacrifice fly by
Michael Pascoe brought home the first CHC run, tying the game at 1-1. LeVan added an RBI single in the second to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats scored once in the third and another solo run in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. Two runs in the eighth inning and two more in the ninth made the score 7-2.
In Chestnut Hill's final at bat. Bowman doubled to lead off the inning and Peluso walked. Both runners advanced on a balk with bowman scoring on a wild pitch. LeVan drove in Peluso after reaching on a one-out error, but the Griffins would not score again as the Wildcats hung on for the 7-4 win.
Colby Seelig took the loss in relief for the Griffins.
The baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, when they host CACC south division rival Goldey-Beacom College for a twilight game at Hostelley Field. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
