Taking a break from conference action, the Chestnut Hill College softball team faced off against Division I Delaware State University in the rain on Wednesday. The Hornets and the Griffins played through a rain soaked first game with the Hornets coming out on top 120 in five innings. The rain eased up for game two with the hornets completing a sweep with a 5-2 win.
The Griffins fall to 2-24 after the sweep. The hornets improve to 13-23.
Mianna Lopez Del Haro had three of the Griffins five hits in the opener, all singles.
Camille Dunham and
Skyler Cunningham also recorded singles.
The Griffins left eight runners on base with their best opportunity to score coming in the first inning. Back-to-back singles from Lopez Del Haro and Cunningham followed by an infield error by the Hornets putting
Anastasia Watson at first, loaded the bases with one out. A foul out and a strikeout followed and the Griffins left the bases full.
Chestnut Hill also put two runners in scoring position in the third and fifth innings. CHC had runners at second and third with one out but were unable to get the ball out of the infield with their next two batters to end the threat. A strikeout followed the Griffins again putting runners no second and third, this time with two outs.
Delaware State scored twice in the second inning and added four runs in the fourth and sixth in the fifth to earn the 12-0 run-rule win.
Kayla Rolon had three hits in game two including a long home run while Lopez del Haro added two. Dunham and Cunningham also recorded singles.
Two Griffin errors in the second inning led to three unearned runs for the Hornets. Rolon led of the bottom of the second and blasted a long home run over the left field fence to make the score 3-1.
The Hornets hit two solo home runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead 5-1. Rolon delivered a two-out RBI single to score Lopez Del Haro in the fifth inning to round out the scoring.
Michelle Baker took the loss in both games for the Griffins, pitching three innings in game one and a complete game in game two, allowing seven runs 9four earned) on 13 hits and striking out four in ten innings of work.
The Griffins' softball team returns to action on Saturday, April 20, 2024 when they travel to face Georgian Court University. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
