Riley Regan's goal just 1:38 into overtime lifted the Chestnut Hill College Women's Lacrosse team to their first conference victory of the season as they defeated Caldwell University 13-12 Wednesday afternoon at Essex Valley Field in West Caldwell, New Jersey.
The Griffins improve to 2-9 overall and 1-6 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games. The Cougars fall to 2-8 overall and 1-7 in league play.
Regan's overtime goal was her fourth of the game and capped a comeback from a 12-11 deficit with five minutes left in regulation. The Griffins won the opening draw of the overtime and got a quick shot off before turning the ball over. Chestnut Hill's defense forced a turnover before the Cougars were able to clear it with
Anna Sanverdine picking up the ground ball. Regan got the ball moments later and put it past Caldwell goalkeeper SarahKate Schneider for the game-winner.
The four goals by Regan paced the Griffins' offense with
Molly Killion adding three. Sanverdine,
Lauren Sullivan and
Allyson Smith added two apiece. Regan added two assists to finish with a game-high six points. Smith added three assists to finish with five points.
Abby Galazka was stellar on defense, recording a game-high seven caused turnovers. The seven caused turnovers tied the Griffin's single game record set back in 2011 by Lindsey Alexander against Dominican. Killion had five caused turnovers while Sanverdine and
Virginia Perry had three apiece. Galazka, Killion, and Perry led the team with four ground balls apiece. The team finished with a season-high 21 caused turnovers and 19 successful clears.
Killion won eight draw controls. Perry earned her second win of 2024 in net, recording two saves.
Caldwell had scored the first two goals in the fourth quarter to erase a one goal deficit and take a 12-11 lead with 5:11 left. The Cougars won the ensuing draw control but quickly turned the ball over and the Griffins were able to successfully clear the ball into their offensive zone, calling a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Killion took a pass from Smith and found the back of the net to tie the game at 12-12.Â
Chestnut Hill's defense then took over, forcing three turnovers in the final three minutes while getting two chances to win the game in regulation. A shot from Killion was saved by Schneider and a shot from Smith went wide with ten seconds left to bring about the extra frame.
Sanverdine and Regan scored Chestnut Hill's first two goals of the game with the cougars answering with three straight goals to take an early 3-2 lead in the second quarter.
The Griffins scored four of the next five goals to retake the lead and build a two goal advantage with Regan, Sullivan, Killion and Sanverdine all scoring. The team was a man down when Sanverdine took a pass from Regan for her second goal of the game with 9:22 left in the quarter.Â
Smith found Sullivan for her second goals of the game, starting a string of three straight goals to push the Griffins' lead to 9-5. Smith tallied the last two goals in the run. Caldwell pulled within three 9-6 by halftime and opened the third quarter scoring to make the score 9-7.
Killion had a man-up goal with 9:07 left in the third, after receiving a pass from
Elena Arenas, giving the Griffins a 10-7 lead. For Arenas it was her first collegiate point.
The Cougars then scored three straight goals to tie the game at 10-10 before Regan notched her third goal of the game and Smith her third assist to put Chestnut Hill ahead 11-10 heading into the final quarter where the Griffins after falling behind, staged their final rally.
For the game, the Griffins outshot the Cougars 35-22 (23-14 on goal).  Caldwell committed 33 turnovers to the Griffins' 21. Chestnut Hill had five more ground balls that Caldwell (20-15) and had eight free-position shots to CU's two.Â
The women's lacrosse team returns to action for their final road game of the season on Saturday, traveling to Connecticut to face Post University. First draw is set for 11:00 a.m.
