Noah Hammon recorded his 100
th career point as the Chestnut Hill College Men's lacrosse team cruised to a 16-6 win over the University of Bridgeport in the regular season finale for both teams Wednesday night at victory field in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania.
The Griffins improve to 9-4 overall and 7-1 in central Atlantic collegiate conference games. The Purple Knights fall to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in league play.
Hammon entered the game six points shy of the 100-point mark and quickly set about reaching the goal. He scored the Griffins' first two goals, giving Chestnut Hill a 2-0 lead with 9:37 left in the first quarter. He assisted on two more first quarter scores and needed just two points to become the 12
th player in program history to record 100 points in their career.Â
It was not until late in the third quarter when Hammon reached the mark, scoring at the 8:15 mark and assisting on the Griffins' 12
th goal of the game with 3:50 left. He becomes the third fastest player in program history to reach 100-career points, reaching the mark in 28 games. Maurice Kelly reached the mark in 21 games in 2022 while Mike Melnychenko reached the mark in 27 games in 2012.
Hammon finished the game with three goals and four assists for seven points.
Sam Slater led the team with four goals and added an assist on Hammon's final goal for one point.Â
Will Duddy, Cade Johnson and
Tommy Austin had two goals apiece.
Brandon Berghaier and
Daniel Grubb had five ground balls apiece while
Kyle Gartenmayer, Chase Snyder and
Evan Farlow had two caused turnovers apiece. J
ulius Sorino tied his career high with 17 saves in the game.
Back and forth action took place for much of the first quarter with the two teams tied at 2-2 with 3:50 left in the period. The Griffins then started pouring on the offense, scoring twice before the quarter ended, three more in the second quarter and the first two goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Berghaier, the team's faceoff specialist, capped off the run with a goal at the 11:55 mark.
Hammon added his third goal of the game at the 8:15 mark via an assist from
Sam Slater with Johnson scoring his second man-up goal of the night less then two minutes later to make the score 11-3.Â
After a late goal by the Purple Knights in the third quarter, the Griffins opened the fourth quarter with four straight scores, the latter two from Slater to lead 16-4. Bridgeport added two unassisted goals in the final 90 seconds to round out the scoring.
The men's lacrosse team is back in action on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, when they host Georgian court University in the semi-finals of the CACC Tournament championship. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at Victory Field.
