Wildcats Snap Griffins Win Streak with a 10-8 Decision

The Chestnut Hill College men's Lacrosse team had their four game winning streak snapped as Wilmington University handed the Griffins a 10-8 loss in the rain at the WU Athletic Complex in Newark, Delaware Wednesday afternoon.

The Griffins drop to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Wildcats improve to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Will Duddy and Sam Slater led six different CHC goal scorers with two goals apiece.  Duddy also added an assist for three total points.  Faceoff specialist Brandon Bergheier led the team with five ground balls while Chase Snyder added three.  Kyle Gartenmayer, Daniel Grubb and Cooper Jackson had two caused turnovers apiece.  Julius Sorino made 17 saves in goal for the Griffins.

Wilmington scored the first five goals and never looked back.  Slater put the Griffins on the board with his first goal of the game with 6:15 left in the second quarter.  The Wildcats tallied another goal before the quarter ended and led 6-1 at halftime.

Duddy tallied a man-up score just 64 seconds into the third quarter, with Cade Johnson on the assist to make the score 6-2.  Wilmington countered with a score shortly thereafter before the Griffins scored twice, both time with man-up opportunities.  Austin Derx took a pass from Nate Matthews for a goal at the 9:40 mark and Duddy added his second man-up goal of the game with 8:25 left in the quarter, taking a pass from Jake Ballerini for the score and pulling the Griffins within three 7-4.  Two more WU goals left the Griffins with a 9-4 deficit heading into the final period.

Evan Farlow and Noah Hammon had back to back unassisted goals to make the score 9-6 with 6:56 left and Slater received a pass from Duddy and shot it into the back of the net with 3:512 left to make the score 9-7.    Johnson had the final goal of the game with 14 seconds left with Hammon getting the assist, making the final score 10-8.

The men's lacrosse team is back in action on Saturday, April 6, 2024, when they host Caldwell University at Victory Field.  First faceoff is set for 2:30 p.m. following the team's senior day ceremony.
