Rachel Mace and Erika Dubosky combined for 24 kills as the Chestnut Hill college women's volleyball team got back on the winning track with a 3-1 win over Southern Connecticut State University at SCSU's Pelz Gym in New Haven, Connecticut Monday evening.
The Owls took the first set 25-20 before the Griffins went on to win the next three, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-22 to take the match.
The Griffins improve to 6-5 with the win while the Owls fall to 2-12.
Dubosky led Chestnut Hill with 13 kills while Mace added 11, accounting for 24 of the team's 41 kills on the night. Cha'kya Johnson and Maya Hopson added six kills apiece.
The Griffins also recorded 13 aces in the match, compared to SCSU's five. Mace, Pamela Uceta and Mia Caporellie had three aces apiece, while Angela April chipped in two.
Caporellie led all players with 33 assists setting up the Griffin offense. Alexandra Crespin added four. Caporellie also recorded a double-double with 11 digs in the match, her third consecutive double-double.
Mace also had a double-double with a team high 14 digs. Dubosky added eight but saw her streak of seven consecutive matches with a double-double come to an end.  April had five solo blocks to pace the Griffins while Mace and Hopson had two total blocks apiece.
The Griffins were in command for much of the first set and held a 17-13 lead before SCSU exploded with ten straight points to take a 23-17 lead. A kill from Dubosky and an ace from Lilian Bandel closed the gap to 23-20 but the Owls scored the final two points to take the set, 25-20.
A kill from Mace and an ace from Caporellie broke an 8-8 tie in the second set as the Griffins went on to open up leads of 16-9 and 20-12 before settling in for the 25-18 win. Johnson had four kills on five attacks all without an error to lead Chestnut Hill.
Hopson duplicated Johnson's effort in the third set as Chestnut Hill used a 7-2 run after trailing 13-12 to take a 19-15 lead and force an Owls timeout. The Griffins closed out the set with a 6-3 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
SCSU jumped out ot an 8-2 lead in the fourth set. Chestnut Hill countered with a 12-2 spurt, taking advantage of six Owl errors as the took a 14-10 lead. April had two aces during the run and Mace added two kills. The Owls climbed back with another 8-2 run to lead 18-16 before Dubosky recorded four kills over the next eight rallies to tie the score at 21-22. An error by the Owls and an ace from Dubosky put the Griffins up 23-22. Following another SCSU service error. Mace landed a kill to give the Griffins the match with a 25-22 win in the set.Â
For the game, the Griffins hit .122 (41 kills, 23 errors, 147 attempts) while the Owls hit .067 (38-28-150).  SCSU had a slim 61-60 margin in digs and both teams finished with nine team blocks. The Griffins out aced the Owls, 13-5.
Emery Raegan led SCSU with 19 kills and 13 digs.
The women's volleyball team returns to action on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, when they host Jefferson University at Sorgenti Arena. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
