Griffins Dominate in Final Period to Defeat Lightning.

Avery White and Tiayo Adelekan combined for 41 points as the Chestnut Hill college Women's basketball team won their second straight game with a dominant fourth quarter, defeating Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division rival Goldey-Beacom College 75-63 Tuesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins improve to 4-1 in CACC games and 8-9 overall with the win.  The Lightning fall to 5-12 overall and 2-3 in league games.

White scored 20 of her game high 22 points in the second half, shooting 5-for-9 from the field while making four three point baskets (five attempts) and going a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.  Adelekan connected on eight of 11 shots from the field  and added three free throws for a career high 19 points. 

Tikyra Miller added ten points while Siobhan Boylan chipped in eight.  Emily Sekerak led the team with seven rebounds and had five assists.  Miller also had five assists and White added four.

Adelekan, White and Boylan combined for 20 of the Griffins 27 points in the fourth quarter as Chestnut Hill turned a one point deficit heading into the final period into a double digit lead as the period progressed. 

The Griffins scored the first eight points of the final period with Miller opening the scoring with a pair of free throws followed by layups from Adelekan and Sekerak.  White capped the run with  two free throws of her own.  After a GBC free throw, Adelekan scored five straight points to put the Griffins up 11, 61-50  with 4:13 left.   Chestnut Hill held the Lightning without a field goal until the 4:04 mark of the period when Rory Ciszkowski (13 points) scored on a layup.  Bridie McCann's free throw put the Griffins back up by 10 before Boylan scored all five points of a 5-2 run to put the Griffins up by 13, 69-56  .  White made all six of her free throws in the final minute of the game to provide the Griffins with their biggest lead at 75-61 before the Lightning added a field goal in the final seconds to round out the scoring.

The Lightning jumped out to an early 17-8 lead after the first quarter and extended it to double digits with the first score in the second period.  Boylan  then nailed a three-point bucket that started a run of ten straight CHC points to cut the lead to one, 19-18.  Sara Tamoun and miller added baskets, and Adelekan capped the run with a traditional three point play.  Adelekan extended the run to a 14-2 effort with two layups and the Griffins had their first lead of the game 22-21 and maintained the one-point lead heading into halftime 25-24.

The third quarter saw seven lead changes as the Lightning outscored the Griffins 25-23 to lead 49-48 heading into the decisive fourth quarter where the Griffins dominated the last ten minutes of action.

Katie Yoder led the Lightning with 14 points while Ciszkowski added 13.  Julie Kulesza had six rebounds and six assists.

For the game, the Griffins shot 47.3% (26-55) while the Lightning  connected on 40.6% (26-64) of their shots.  The Griffins made 16 of 18 free throws (88.9%) while the Lightning made just four of five (80%).  CHC held a 37-29 rebounding advantage while both teams committed 15 turnovers.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 18, 2025, when they travel to face Bloomfield college for a CACC crossover contest in Bloomfield, New Jersey.  Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
