Griffins Suffer Road Loss to Rams

A solid second quarter by the Jefferson University women's basketball team proved too much to overcome for the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team as the Griffins had their three game winning streak snapped with a 70-55 loss.

Chestnut Hill falls to 9-10 overall and 5-2 in Central Atlantic collegiate Conference games.  The Rams improve to 11-6 overall and 5-2 in league play.

Tikyra Miller and Bridie McCann led the Griffins with 12 points apiece while Sara Tamoun and Bri Rider chipped in six apiece.  Emily Sekarek led the team with eight rebounds with Rider adding seven.  Caleigh Edwards, Avery White and McCann had two assists apiece and White finished the game with four steals.

Jefferson outscored Chestnut Hill 25-12 in the second quarter, turning a one point lead into a 14-point advantage.  The Rams opened the quarter with a 7-2 run to take a six point lead 23-17 and expanded the lead to 28-21 with 4:35 left in the period. Following a layup from Miller that cut the lead to five, Jefferson closed out the quarter with a 13-4 spurt to lead 41-27 at halftime.

The Griffins outscored the Rams 15-14 in the third quarter, although Jefferson did expand their lead to as many as 19 points and still led by 17, 53-36 with 4:37 left in the quarter, when the Griffins scored six straight points, getting two baseline jumpers from Rider and a driving layup from Edwards to pull within 11, 53-42.    Cassie Murphy added two free throws in the final minute to make the score 55-42 heading into the final period.

The Rams maintained the double digit lead throughout the fourth quarter with the Griffins only closing within 12 on two occasions before the Rams finished off the 70-55 win.

Murphy led the Rams with 23 points.  Emma Kuczynski chipped in 20.  Tori Nigro had 12 points and ten assists.

For the game, the Griffins shot 34.3% (24-70) while the Rams shot 45.6% (26-57).  Jefferson was 15-17 (88.2%) from the free throw line while Chestnut Hill was just 4-6 (66.7%).  The Rams held a 41=38 rebounding advantage and also committed 12 turnovers to CHC's season low of ten.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 25, 2025 when they host Caldwell University at Sorgenti Arena.  Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
