Rebecca Dalton scored just 51 seconds into the game as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Soccer team made that one score stand to win their fifth straight game, defeating Wilmington University 1-0 Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics complex in Newark, Delaware.
The Griffins five game winning streak is the program's longest since the 2010 season and their first against the Wildcats since the 2011 campaign. Chestnut Hill improves to 8-6 overall and 8-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play, taking over first place in the league standings with 24 points and two games to play.  (Jefferson University is second with 22 points and three games left). The Wildcats suffer their first conference loss of the season, falling to 4-1-5 in league play and 7-2-6 overall.
The win also ensure the Griffins of one of the top three seeds in the upcoming CACC Championship Tournament.
Dalton's goal came as the Wildcats were trying to clear the ball out of the attack zone, with two defenders touching the ball allowing it to get past the goalkeeper right to Dalton's foot who put in the net for her seventh goal of the season.
Haley Esposito picked up the complete game shutout, her first of the season to go with two combined shutouts, stopping four Wildcat shots.
Hayden Johnson recorded two shots (one on goal) and Lauren Sullivan added a shot all in the first period before the Wildcats were able to get a shot off.
Wilmington notched one shot on goal and five off target shots before the period ended.Â
The Wildcats added two more shots on goal in the first ten minutes of the second half, keeping pressure of the Griffin defense. Then with nearly 29 minutes left to play, a Griffins field player was called for a red card, forcing the Griffins to play a man down for the rest of the game.
The "Gritty Griffs" defense however kicked it up even more, allowing only one shot on goal by the Wildcats the rest of the way as Esposito and the rest of the Griffins kept the Wildcats of the scoreboard to earn the shutout win, their sixth in league games this season.
The Griffins return to action for their final regular season home game, taking on the University of Bridgeport at Victory Field. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. Chestnut Hill will close out the regular season with a game at Jefferson University on November 4.
