Jeremiah Gorham scored a career high 21 points, leading four players in double figures as the Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule with an 80-67 win over the University of the District of Columbia Thursday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.
The Griffins improve to 4-7 while the firebirds fall to 1-9.
Gorham connected on eight of 11 shots from the field, including a 5-7 effort from beyond the three-point arc. Alejandro Cybak added 17 points (6-11 FG, 4-4 FT) while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Landon Shivers and Malcolm Day rounded out the double figure scorers for Chestnut Hill with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Amari Dow and Kamal Lee had six assists apiece while Dow, Day, and Tyler Spencer pulled down five rebounds each to compliment Cybak in that department. Cybak also had two steals on the afternoon.
The Griffins did lead the contest wire-to-wire, but the Firebirds kept it  close for much of the first ten minutes.  Cybak started a 10-0 run with a three-point basket at the 13:29 mark to put the Griffins up five, 18-13. Lee followed with a pair of free throws and a three-point basket and Day added a layup at the 8:43 mark to give the Griffins a 12-point lead 25-13.Â
UDC countered with a 14-5 run to close within three 30-27 with 4:27 left. A Shivers three-point basket put the Griffins back up by seven 37-30 with just under two minutes left but the firebirds stormed back with six straight points to cut the lead to one before a Shivers dunk at the buzzer gave the Griffins a three-point lead at the half., 39-36.
Gorham hit his fourth three-ball of the game just a minute into the second half to increase the Griffins lead to 44-36 and added his final three-point bucket at the 14:27 mark to put the Griffins back up by double digits 54-42. The Firebirds, however, chipped away slowly, closing within seven 63-56 before Marshall Baker nailed a three-point basket to put CHC back up by ten 66-56 with 7:19 left.   Baker's second three-ball with 4:11 left pushed the lead to 74-60 and layups from Dow and Cybak gave the Griffins their biggest lead of the game 80-62 and capped off a 12-4 run before settling in for the 13-point win.
Chestnut Hill made a season high 12 three-point baskets (12-27, 44.4%) and shot over 50% for the game (30-59, 50.8%) for the third time this season. Chestnut Hill also turned in a solid effort at the free throw line, making eight of nine (88.9%) and committed a season low ten turnovers. The Griffins outrebounded the Firebirds 34-28 and had a 15-8 advantage in second chance points. CHC also turned in a nice 22/10 assist/turnover margin.
The men's basketball team returns to action after the holiday break with a game at Felician University  on Saturday January 3, 2026. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
