Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Strong Second Half and a Career-High From Charles gives Griffins a big Win over Lightning

Noah Charles scored a career-high 24 points while Alejandro Redondo Cybak recorded another double-double as the Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team turned in a dominant second half performance to defeat host Goldey-Beacom College 76-66 Tuesday afternoon at the Jones Center in Wilmington, Delaware.

With the win, the Griffins take over sole possession of first place in the Central Atlantic collegiate conference South division with an 8-5 conference record with three CACC games left.  The Lightning who entered the game tied with the Griffins all to 7-6 in league play.  Chestnut Hill is now 12-11 overall.

Charles scored 18 of his 24 points in that dominant second half, making three three-point baskets (5-8 FG overall, 5-6 FT in the period).  The graduate guard finished the game making seven of 11 shots from the field and seven of eight from the free throw line.  Cybak connected on eight of 13 shots from the field for 17 total points and recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 11 rebounds. IV Pettit added 17 points to round out Chestnut Hill's double figure scorers.

Neal Hill dished out five assists, two steals and had four blocks to pace the Griffins, while also grabbing seven rebounds, ending his streak of consecutive games with double-digit rebounds at 13.

Leading by just one at the half, 32-31. The griffins got two three point baskets from Charles and one from Pettit as they used an 11-7 run in the first 3:50 to expand their lead to five 43-38. The lightning came back to tie the game three times, the last at 49-all with 12:28 left.  Omari Salvi then added four points and Pettit scored on a layup to push the Griffins lead to 55-49 with 9:25 left in the game.  Again, the Lightning struck back, cutting the lead to two 57-55 before another 6-0 outburst from the Griffins increased their lead to eight, 63-55 with 4:51 left.  The lightning would come no closer than five the rest of the way as the Griffins maintained their lead and expanded it to ten three times in the final minute with Kamal Lee providing the final two points from the free throw line with 23 seconds left.

In the opening half, the Lightning led for much of the period, building a nine point lead, 27-18 midway through the period before the Griffins clawed their way back with a 12-2 run to take a 30-29 lead with 3:14 left with Lee's three-ball serving as the go-ahead basket at the time. Charles added a layup in the final seconds to give the Griffins the 32-31 lead at the half.

Both teams shot exceptionally well throughout much of the game with the Griffins producing a 50% shooting effort from the field (25-50) and the Lightning making 48.3% of their shots.  Chestnut Hill dominated on the free throw, making 24 (79.2%) while Goldey-Beacom converted just four of ten from the charity stripe (40%).  Rebounds were about eve (GBC-30, CHC-29) as were turnovers (GBC-12, CHC – 10).

The men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 15, 2025, when they host Jefferson University for a key CACC South Division contest.  Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
