Six players reached double figures, including all five starters. as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team used a solid team effort to take home an 80-70 win at Goldey-Beacom College Tuesday afternoon at GBC's Jones Center in Wilmington, Delaware.
The Griffins improve to 14-11 overall and 10-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Lightning fall to 7-18 overall and 4-9 in league play. The win was the Griffins' third straight and fifth in their last six games.
Bridie McCann led Chestnut Hill with 20 points (four 3pt. FG) while Sara Tamoun recorded her first double-double of the season with 15 points (6-9 FG) and 11 rebounds. Avery White also turned in a solid effort with 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Tikyra Miller and Bri Rider had ten points apiece with Rider grabbing nine rebounds and Miller dishing out five assists.   Tiayo Adelekan came off the bench to score 11 points and grab nine rebounds. She also recorded three blocks on the afternoon.
The Griffins came out on fire in the first quarter, making 15 of 21 shots from the field as the jumped out to a 36-13 lead.   Chestnut Hill took a six point lead and increased it to double figures with a 7-2 run capped by an Adelekan layup, taking a 19-8 lead. The Griffins closed out the quarter with a 17-5 run to take the 23-point lead.  Tamoun scored ten points in the quarter while White and McCann added eight points apiece with each of them making a pair of three point baskets
The Lightning opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run to close the gap to 36-20. McCann's third three-point basket of the game broke the run at the 8:16 mark. Following another McCann basket, the Lightning went on a 17-3 run to cut the lead to single digits 44-37 with just under a minute remaining. Rider added a layup and McCann a three-point basket to push the lead back up to 12, 49-37 at halftime.
Goldey-Beacom kicked off the third quarter with five straight points to close within seven and continued to chip away at the lead, closing within three by quarter's end, 62-59.
Rider opened the final quarter with a layup, starting an 10-4 run by the Griffins as they increased the lead to nine, 72-63 midway the period.  After the Lightning closed within five with 3:44 left, the Griffins closed out the game with an 8-3 run to finish with the ten-point win, 80-70. Miller and Adelekan had four points apiece in the final run.
For the game, the Griffins shot 44.9% from the field (31-69) while the Lightning shot 40.9% (27-66). The Griffins also outrebounded the Lightning 46-31 and led the contest for all but 31 seconds early in the first quarter.
The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 15, 2025 when they host Jefferson University for a key CACC South Division contest. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
