The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team opened their 2025 season with a doubleheader split against the University of New Haven on Friday, dropping the first game 8-5 while earning the split with a 4-1 win in game two at the Ripken Experience Baseball complex in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
New Haven is ranked sixth in the NCBWA Pre-Season East Region poll.
Jason Kelly turned in a stellar performance in the second game, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving up a double in the fifth inning. He finished the game pitching a complete game one hitter while striking out eight and walking three, allowing just one unearned run. He also delivered a two-run double to score the go-ahead runs.
Michael Pascoe added three hits including a triple while Justin Geiger and Kenyon Motley had two hits apiece, the second of which was a double.
New Haven struck first with an unearned run in the first inning. Chestnut Hill evened the score in their next at-bat as Pascoe delivered a two-out triple and Dylan Broderick singled to score Pascoe with the tying run.
With the game still tied at 1-1 heading into the fifth inning. Phoenix Bowman singled to lead off the inning  and advanced to second on a walk to Michael Benedetto III. Kelly then delivered a one-out double to score both runners and give the Griffins a 3-1 lead.Â
In the sixth, the Griffins added an insurance run when Benedetto singled home Daniel Ciotti to take a 4-1 lead. Kelly retired the final nine batter he faced to earn his first win as a Griffin with a complete game effort.
Randy Ramnarace took the loss for the Chargers.
In the opener, the Chargers produced a five-run sixth inning as they held off a late rally by the Griffins to win 8-5.Â
Aiden Myers and Motley both  hit home runs while Meyers, Kelly and Motley had two hits apiece. Jake Schweiker took the loss, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs while striking out four.
Kelly drove in Chestnut Hill's first run with a two-out single in the bottom half of the first inning, scoring Benedetto who had walked and advanced on a balk.  The Chargers answered with single runs in the second and third innings to take a two run lead before exploding for five runs on three hits and two Griffin errors to take a 7-1 lead.
Myers blasted a three run home run in the seventh inning, scoring Bowman and Shawn Levan with two out  to make the score 7-4. Motley added a solo home run in the eighth to round out the scoring.
Liam Carroll earned the win, pitching six innings of one-run ball.
The baseball team returns to action on Saturday, February 22, 2025, when they play Molloy University in the third game of the Northeast Challenge at the Ripken Experience Baseball Complex in Myrtle Beach, south Carolina. First pitch is at 11:00 a.m.
