Avery White led three players in double figures as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team handily defeated nationally ranked Holy Family University 68-47 Wednesday night at HFU's Campus Center in northeast Philadelphia.
The Griffins improve to 8-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games and 11-11 overall. The Tigers, ranked #20 in the most recent D2CSC Division II Media Poll, fall to 18-4 overall and suffer their first conference loss of the season and stand at 10-1.
White shot 50% from the field, making seven field goals (4-8 three-point FG) en route to a game high 18 points. Bridie McCann added 11 points 4-9 FG, 3-5 3FG), all in the second half. Tikyra Miller added ten points (5-9 FG).
Bri Rider led the team with eight rebounds while Tiayo Adelekan contributed seven. McCann led the team with four assists while White contributed two blocks.
The two teams exchanged baskets to start the game with the Tigers holding a 9-8 lead before the Griffins exploded for nine straight points to take a 17-9 lead with baskets from four different players. Emily Sekerak's jumper in the paint increased the lead to nine, 19-10 before the Tigers score in the final minute to cut the lead to seven 19-12 by the end of the quarter.
Chestnut Hill opened the second quarter with a 9-2 run to take a 28-14 lead. The Tigers scored two straight baskets before White added a three-point bucket and later a layup to increase their lead to 33-18. Caleigh Edwards had a driving layup at the buzzer to give the Griffins a 35-18 lead at the half.
McCann came to life in the third quarter, scoring nine points all on three point baskets as the Griffins expanded their lead to 20, 55-35 heading into the final period.
The Tigers' Taylor Hinkle scored the first basket of the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 18 but tis would be as close as the hosts would get as CHC scored the next five to take their biggest lead of the game 60-37 following Edwards' three-point basket. Rider provided five points and five key rebounds down the stretch to secure the 21-point win.
Hinkle led the Tigers with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Carolyn Prevost added ten points.
For the game, the Griffins shot 44.4% (28-63) from the field while their defense limited the Tigers to just a 30.5% (18-59) shooting effort. CHC doubled up HFU with eight 'threes' to HFU's four. The Griffins also outrebounded the Tigers 42-36 and took advantage if 16 Holy Family turnovers, scoring 16 points. The Tigers scored just eight points off 14 CHC miscues.
The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 8, 2025 when they host the first place team in the CACC North Division, Dominican University at Sorgenti Arena. Â Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
