Griffins' Win Streak Snapped as Team Splits with Purple Knights

The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday afternoon as the Griffins split a doubleheader with the University of Bridgeport, dropping game one 4-3 while rallying to win game two 7-5 at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The Griffins record now stands at 18-15 overall and 13-9 in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference games. The Purple Knights are now 11-30 overall and 9-19 in league play.

Chestnut Hill trailed 4-3 heading into their final at-bat in game two when the team strung together four hits to score three times and take a 7-5 lead. Dylan Broderick gave up a two-out double in Bridgeport's final at-bat but left him stranded on base as the Griffins pulled out the win.

Broderick improved to 6-1 on the season with the complete game win, striking out four batters while walking one. Michael Benedetto III, Aiden Myers and Nick Shiffler had two hits apiece and Jason Kelly drove in two runs

Benedetto started off the Griffins' final rally with a double to right center field  and Myers followed with an infield single. A wild pitch then brought home Benedetto and Shiffler singled to score Myers with the go-ahead run. Justin Geiger followed with a double to score Shiffler to make the score 7-5, leading to Broderick shutting the door in the bottom half of the inning.

Chestnut Hill had solo runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings while Bridgeport scored once in the second, twice in the third and had solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Kenyon Motley scored the Griffins' first run in the second, singling and then stealing second and third before scoring on Kelly's  groundout. In the fourth, the Griffins, now trailing 3-1, clawed a run back on Motley's sacrifice fly.

Bridgeport again went up by two heading into the fifth inning when Benedetto delivered a two-out single advanced to third on Myers' single and scored on an outfield error.

The Purple Knights answered with a run in the fifth and the Griffins again pulled within one, 5-4 on Kelly's RBI single in the sixth, leading up to their winning rally in the seventh.

Bridgeport took game one on a walkoff, scoring twice in the ninth inning to erase a 3-2 Griffin lead and win 4-3. Colby Seelig took the loss in relief of starter Jake Schweiker, falling to 4-4 on the season. Seelig gave up six hits and the two runs in the ninth inning in 2.2 innings of work. Schweiker went six innings, giving up the Purple Knights first two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out three.

Schweiker's three strikeouts moved him into a tie for fifth place with Andrew Sibson (2015-18) on the Griffins' all-time strikeout list with 144 for his career. Dominic Raia is the Griffins' all-time leader with 252.

Benedetto and Michael Pascoe had two hits apiece. Myers, Geiger and Wyatt Spinks all drove in a run.

Trailing 2-0 in the third, Spinks delivered a one-out triple  to score Phoenix Bowman  and two batters later scored on Myers' single to tie the game at 2-2. In the fifth inning, Geiger drew a bases loaded walk to score Myers and give the Griffins a 3-2 lead which held until Bridgeport came through in their final at-bat to secure a 4-3 walkoff win.

The baseball team returns to action on Thursday, April 17, 2025, when they host first place Goldey-Beacom College for the first two of a four game series. First pitch at Hostelley Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
