The quest for a fifth straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship came to an end for the Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team as their comeback effort fell short in overtime, falling to Georgian court University 13-12 Wednesday afternoon at GCU's Track and Field Complex in Lakewood, New Jersey.
The Griffins finish their season with a 7-6 record.Â
The Griffins, who trailed by as many as five goals earlier in the game, pulled within one late in the fourth quarter only to have the Lions increase the lead back to two with just under two minutes remaining. Chestnut Hill scored twice in the final 40 seconds with the last goal  scored by Mick Kilgallon  with just four seconds left to send the game into overtime deadlocked at 12-12.
The Lions won the faceoff to start the overtime period and never lost possession, scoring with 2:38 on the clock to send the Griffins home with their earliest exit ever in the conference championship tournament.
Austin Derx led the Griffins with four goals (on four shots) while Noah Hammon added three. Kilgallon scored twice while the Griffins also got goals from Jake Ballerini, Will Duddy and Sam Slater. Slater assisted on four goals to finish the game with five points.
Evan Farlow led the team with five ground balls while Slater added four. Farlow, Sam Koehler, and Thomas Gallagher had two caused turnovers apiece. Adam Daley made 16 saves in net for the Griffins.
Georgian Court jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 8:30 of the game before Duddy put the Griffins on the board with an unassisted goal with 5:25 left. Hammon added a man-up goal with 3:35 left to close the gap to 4-2.
The Lions increased their lead to five, 8-3 with four goals in the second quarter with Hammon scoring the only goal until the final minute of play, getting an assist from Ballerini. Derx scored his first goal of the game with 28 seconds left to make the score 8-4 as the teams broke for halftime.
Kilgallon and Derx tallied the only scores of the third quarter, as the Griffins pulled within two 8-6 heading into the final period.Â
GCU extended their lead back to four with two goals in the first 2:10 of the fourth quarter leaving the Griffins facing a bigger uphill battle in the final period. Slater scored with 7:52 left in the game with Billy Power getting the assist and Derx added his third goal with 6:15 left as slater assisted on his score, cutting the Lions lead back to two 10-8.
Brett Bridges had an unassisted goal to put the Lions back up by three 11-8 with 5:55 left before Ballerini scored just 23 seconds later. Hammon scored with 2:24 left to make it a one goal game 11-10 with 2:24 left. Thirty-nine seconds later the Lions were back up by two with their 12th goal of the game, 12-10.Â
Derx scored his fourth and final goal with 40 seconds left as Slater earned his fourth assist of the contest.  Carter Getz won the faceoff following the Derx score and the Griffins used their last timeout with 31 seconds left. Kilgallon fired a shot with four seconds left past GCU goalkeeper Vincent Burkhart to tie the game and force overtime.
The Lions won the faceoff and called timeout to set up their play which led to Millan Webster putting a shot past Daley to win the game for the Lions.
