Nine different players recorded at least one kill as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team won their second straight conference contest, sweeping Caldwell University 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.
Chestnut Hill opened the watch with a 25-20 first set win and proceeded to sweep the next two sets 25-15 and 25-12. Â
The Griffins improve to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Cougars fall to 3-12 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Kass Kimmel led the Griffins with 13 kills while Macayla Lindner added nine. Lindner committed just one attack error (second set) and finished with a solid .471 attack% (9-1-17). Kayle Arozio chipped in six kills. Caroline Croteau led the team with a career-high five aces while Kimmel and Katelyn Dougherty added three apiece. Sarah Allen added two aces. Sofia Rodriguez led the team with 27 assists.
On the defensive side, it was a balanced effort as five different players had seven or more. Rodriguez led all players with ten digs while Rachel Mace, Alex Crespin and Croteau added eight digs apiece. Lindner also chipped in seven digs. Arozio led the team with two blocks.
The Griffins jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first set and never trailed. The Cougars did come within one point late in the match 20-19, but the Griffins closed out the set with a 5-1 run for the 25-20 win. Kimmel had eight kills and just one error in the set (8-1-12).
Caldwell jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set before the Griffins ran off five straight points to lead 5-4, getting kills from Ayla Mirarchi and Arozio along with an ace from Croteau and a couple of errors by the Cougars. The two teams then produced six ties and five lead changes before the Griffins scored five straight points to take a 17-12 lead, taking advantage of three errors from Caldwell and getting an ace from Dougherty and a kill from Lindner. The Griffins still led by five, 20-15, when they closed out the set with five straight points to win 25-15.
The third set was close early on with the Cougars holding an early lead. Five straight service points from Dougherty erased a one point deficit, giving the Griffins the lead for good, 7-3. The Cougars would come no closer than three points the rest of the way and closed out the match with a 10-3 uprising capped by three straight aces from Croteau and followed by Kimmel's final kill of the match.
For the match, the Griffins held a 40-13 kills advantage,14-3 aces advantage and a 56-37 digs advantage while recording their best attack percentage of the season (40-19-106, .198)
The women's volleyball team returns to action on Wednesday, October 7 when they travel to Lakewood, New Jersey to face Georgian Court University. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
