Dolphins Sweep Griffins in New York

The Chestnut Hill College Softball team returned to action on Tuesday, dropping both ends of their doubleheader at the College of Staten Island, losing the opener 11-9 and then dropping the nightcap, 3-1.

The Griffins fall to 4-6 with the two losses.  The Dolphins improve to 3-3.

Chestnut Hill banged out 13 hits in the opening game, but their late inning rally fell short.  Kayla Childress had three hits while Kassidy Colangelo and Madison Band had two apiece.  Eight different players drove in a run with Band recording two RBI.

Rebecca Cessna took the loss, giving up eight runs on eight hits over 1.2 innings of work, falling to 2-2 on the season.

Childress singled to start off the game and came around to score on Izabella Rodriguez's double.   Jenn Pokropinski walked and both runners came around to score on Band's single and a infield throwing error.  Moira Maw knocked in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly to give the Griffins a 4-0 lead.

Four CSI hits and two Griffin errors allowed the hosts to tie the score a 4-4 in the bottom half of the first. Colangelo singled to open the second inning and moved to third on Childress' double. Aubrey Cammuso followed with a sacrifice fly to score Colangelo with the Griffins' fifth run.  Two batters later Pokropinski delivered an RBI double with two outs to make the score 6-4.

Staten Island exploded for five runs in the second, chasing Cessna as Michelle Baker came on to pitch, giving up one run in the inning as the Dolphins took a 9-6 lead. Baker finished the game, pitching 4.1 innings.

Two more CSI runs scored in the bottom of the sixth before the Griffins staged a rally in their final at-bat.  Band and Mikayla Pengelly opened the seventh with back-to-back singles.  Jazmine Ramirez later reached first on an infield error, scoring Giselle McLaughlin who came in to run for Band.   Colangelo and Childress then delivered back-to-back singles, scoring Pengelly and Brynn Pollard, who was running for Ramirez to make the score 11-9.  CSI pitcher Kennedie Ruth then retired two of the final three batters to end the game.

In the second game, Griffins starter Belle Tetreault and CSI starter Marena Grenier were both perfect through the first three innings.  Rodriguez and Pokropinski became the Griffins' first two baserunners, drawing walks in the fourth inning, but not scoring.

The Dolphins got to Tetreault in the bottom  half of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits and taking advantage of a CHC error in the inning.   CSI maintained their 3-0 lead until the seventh when Devin Warner and Pengelly hit back-to-back doubles to score Chestnut Hill's only run.

Tetreault took the loss, her first of the season (2-1), striking out four batters and allowing two earned runs in the complete game effort.  Pengelly had two of the griffins four hits in the contest.

The softball team returns to action on Thursday, March 12, 2026 with a doubleheader at Millersville University.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
