Cougars Sweep Griffins to Spoil their Home Opener

The Chestnut Hill College softball team had their home opener on Thursday, hosting Caldwell University at the CHC softball field as they began conference play.  The Cougars spoiled the Griffins first home games with a two-game sweep, 4-0 and 5-2.

The Griffins fall to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Cougars improve to 9-11 overall and 4-0 in league play.

Belle Tetreault took the loss in the opener, giving up three runs on five hits and striking out four over 4.2 innings of work.  Brynn Pollard had two of the Griffins six hits, all singles.

Caldwell scored three runs in the in the fifth inning and added one more in the sixth off reliever Moira Maw.

In the second game, Rebecca Cessna pitched 5.1 innings and gave up all five Caldwell runs. Mikayla Pengelly had two hits and drove in the Griffins second run.

The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning and increased it to 4-0 with a run in the fifth inning.

The Griffins got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth inning.  Pollard drew a one-out walk and Jenn Pokropinski reached on a fielder's choice as Pollard slid safely ahead of the throw to second.  Pearl McKay then drew a walk to load the bases.   Jazmine Ramirez followed with an infield grounder, and Pollard was forced out at home but the Cougar catcher in an attempt to throw out Ramirez at first threw the ball away allowing Pokropinski to score with the Griffins first run.  The runners moved up on a wild pitch and Pengelly followed with a single to right field to score McKay and make the score 4-2.

Caldwell scored once more in the top of the sixth to increase their lead to 5-2.  The Griffins were retired in order in the sixth and put one runner on in the seventh but were unable to score.

The softball team returns to action on Saturday, March 28, 2026 when they travel to face Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
