Softball Team Wins Two on Opening Day of Season

The Chestnut Hill College softball team opened their season with a pair of wins on Tuesday, defeating Bay Path University 8-0 and Waynesburg University  9-1 at North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Griffins two wins mark the first time the program has started the season with two win since the 2019 season when Chestnut Hill won their first three games.

Belle Tetreault pitched a complete five inning two hit shutout against Bay Path, waling three batters and striking out two.

The Griffins scored their first run in the third inning when Haley Kober laced a line drive single to centerfield to score Devin Warner who had singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a fielder's choice.

The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when the Griffins plated three runs.  Kayla Childress had a one out triple to start the offensive attack.  Jenn Pokropinski followed with a double to score Childress and then scored on an infield error.  Izabella Rodriguez, who reached base on the error later scored on an errant throw by the catcher.

Four more runs by the Griffins in the bottom of the fifth ended the game via the eight-run rule.  Warner and Madison Band delivered back-to-back one-out singles with Warner scoring on Kober's groundout.  Hannah Theuret who came in to run for Band at second base, then scored on an infield error off the bat of Childress.  Childress went to third on a passed ball and scored on another infield error.  Pokropinski who walked and stole second came around to score on Sabrina Martin's single to end the game.

Pokropinski and Warner finished the game with two hits apiece while Kober had two RBI.

In the second game, the Griffins scored in six of the seven innings as they cruised to a 9-1 win.  Rebecca Cessna pitched five innings, allowing one unearned run on eight hits wile striking out three to earn the win.  Michelle Baker pitched the final two innings, allowing just two hits and no runs with three strikeouts.

Martin and Theuret had three hits and two RBI apiece.   Theuret tied a school record with two triples in the game.  Aubrey Cammuso and Giselle McLaughlin added two hits each.

Cammuso scored the Griffins' first run  after leading off the game with a single and scoring on Childress' single.  Waynesburg tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.

Martin's RBI single in the third gave the Griffins a 2-1 lead. Theuret hit her first triple of the game in the fourth inning and scored when Moira Maw reached base on an infield error, making the score 3-1.

Chestnut Hill added two more runs in the top half of the fifth with Martin delivering a one-out single and Pokropinski a sacrifice fly, upping CHC's lead to 5-1. Theuret singled, stole second and moved to third on an flyout before scoring on Kassidy Colangelo's infield groundout to make the score 6-1 in the sixth inning.

Theuret's second triple of the game brought home two runs in the seventh, Brynn Pollard who walked and stole second to lead off the inning and Pearl McKay who singled and advanced to second.  Maw followed with a single to score Theuret for the final run.

Baker gave up a leadoff single in the seventh and then retired the next three batters to seal the win.

The softball team has two more games in Myrtle Beach on Wednesday, taking on Grove City College and St. Elizabeth University.
