Griffins Split with Bears to Complete Spring Break Trip

The Chestnut Hill College softball team concluded their spring trip Friday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Shaw University.  The Griffins lost the opener 3-1 while winning the second game 9-1.

The Griffins record is now 4-4 with the doubleheader split.

Rebecca Cessna pitcher a two-hitter in the game two win, striking out three while allowing just one run.  Jenn Pokropinski delivered the big blow, a three-run home run while Brynn Pollard and Braylie LaFisca had two hits apiece.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, the Griffins sent seven batters to the plate, scoring four runs.  Hailey Kober drew a one-out walk and moved to second on LaFisca's single.  Pollard followed with a single to score Kober to bring up Pokropinski, who hit the first pitch she faced over the fence for a three-run home run and a 4-1 Griffins lead.

Kober's sacrifice fly in the third upped the Griffins lead to 5-1.  The score remained 5-1 until the top half of the sixth inning when the Griffins batted around, scoring four times.  Kober and Devin Warner hit back-to-back singles to start the inning.  LaFisca and Pollard then hit back-to-back doubles to plate two runs.  Pollard then scored following a pair of wild pitches. The Shaw pitcher then walked the bases loaded before Moira Maw  drew the fourth straight walk to score Kassidy Colangelo with Chestnut Hill's ninth run.

Cessna gave up a one out single in the bottom of the sixth then retired the next two batters to end the game.

In the opener, Shaw scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings and made it hold up en route to a 3-1 win over the Griffins.

LaFisca took the loss, allowing all three runs on seven hits while striking out one.

Izabella Rodriguez and Mikayla Pengelly had the only two hits for the Griffins, with Pengelly's going for two bases.

The Griffins' only run came in the second when Rodriguez hit a one-out single and came around to score when Pengelly reached on an error, giving the Griffins an early 1-0 lead.

The Bears tied the game in the bottom of the second and went ahead in third with a solo run.  Shaw added an insurance run in the fourth to round out the scoring.

The softball team returns to action on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 with a doubleheader at the College of Staten Island.  First pitch is at 2:00 p.m.
