Martin's Goal Lifts Griffins to an Overtime Win over Tigers

Samantha Martin's goal with 1:54 left in the second overtime lifted the Chestnut Hill College Women's Lacrosse team to an 11-10 win over Holy Family University Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field in Lafayette Hill.

The win was the Griffins first win over the Tigers since the 2018 season.  The Griffins improve to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in Central Atlantic collegiate Conference games.  The Tigers fall to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Martin's goal came following a turnover by Holy Family that was caused by teammate Molly Miller.  Miller picked up the ground ball and advanced play forward until the Griffins were in the offensive end.  After about 30 seconds on offense, Ryley Geary found Martin who drove on the right side and shot it past HFU goalkeeper Haydee Guzman for the game-winner.

The game also saw Griffins goalkeeper Mel Amador become CHC's all-time leader in saves with 594 breaking the old mark of 580 set by Katie Joe Lang from 2014-17.

Kendall Gayton finished the game with five goals while Geary had four assists (all in the 4th quarter) and a goal for five points.  Miller had a goal and an assist.  Bryce Westervelt, Carlee O'Donnell, Nicole George and Martin all had one goal apiece.

Maya Zullo led the team with four ground ball while Martin, Westervelt and Mel Amador had three ground balls apiece. Martin and Gayton had two caused turnovers apiece while Gayton led the team winning three draw controls.  Amador had 15 saves in goal.

The Griffins trailed 9-5 heading into the final quarter when Gayton tallied her fourth goal of the game to start the Chestnut Hill comeback.  Geary assisted on the goal at the 12:33 mark.  O'Donnell followed with a goal at the 10:33 mark, again assisted by Geary.  Miller scored with 7:20 left to pull the griffins within one 9-8.

A man-up goal from Holy Family made the score 10-8 with just 3:53 left.  Gayton notched her fifth goal of the game with three minutes left and Westervelt added the game tying goal with just 1:26 left as Geary earned her third assist- evening the score at 10-10.

In the second overtime, Geary then set up Martin for the game-winner.

Earlier in the game, Gayton scored Chestnut Hill's first three goals as the Griffins trailed 5-3 at halftime.  Two were unassisted and the third was assisted by Gen Washington-Vasquez. George scored with 8:02 left in the third quarter and Geary tallied a man-up goal with 3:26 left in the period to cut the Tiger lead to 9-5 before the Griffins began their comeback in the final period.

The women's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, April 4, 2026 when they travel to face first place Jefferson University.  First draw is set for 11:00 a.m.
