West Chester University exploded for 15 runs in the first inning as they went on to defeat the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team 21-7 Monday afternoon in the first round game of the annual Bill Giles Invitational at Serpico Stadium in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
The Griffins fall to 14-13 with the loss while the Rams improve to 23-5.
Kenyon Motley, Matthew Sharkey and Ryan McNichol had two hits apiece while also driving in two runs. Nicholas Shiffler also produced a two-hit game. Jackson Shollenberger took the loss, giving up the Golden Rams first six runs in the opening inning while facing just seven batters.
West Chester increased the lead with a run in the third and two more in the fourth before the Griffins got on the board in the fifth inning. Shiffler and Anthony Jakeman singled to put two runners on with two out in the inning. McNichol followed with a double as Shiffler and Jakeman scored. Motley then delivered a double to score McNichol and Sharkey followed with a single as motley scored, making the score 18-4.
Shiffler doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch to lead off the top half of the sixth inning. Michael Melosky followed with an RBI single as Shiffler scored. Melosky came around to score on Motley's triple and Sharkey then plated Motley with a single to left field, cutting the WCU lead to 18-7.
The Golden Rams scored three times in the eighth inning to round out the scoring as they advanced to the Bill Giles Championship game which will take place at Citizen's Bank Park.
The baseball team returns to action with a doubleheader at Georgian Court University on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. First pitch is at 2:00 p.m.
