Hugo Almeida and Griffins Golf team Record Record Setting Performances at Vulcan Invitational

The weather did not cooperate with the Vulcan Invitational Golf Tournament at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon, Pa., hosted by California University of Pennsylvania, forcing the cancellation of Friday's final round.  The Chestnut Hill College Golf team, however, made a strong showing against some solid programs in the first two rounds of the tournament, and set a few records in the process as they placed eighth out of 14 teams.

The Griffins sat in tenth place after the first round with a team score of 307 but improved 12 strokes in round two for a score of 295 to finish with a final score of 602 and the 8th place finish.  The team's 602 score is the lowest round 36-hole team score in program history, breaking the old record of 605 set over a decade ago in April 2016 at the Dowling Memorial Tournament at the Tall Grass Golf Course in Shoreham, New York.

The team's 295 score was seven over par breaking the school record of low score vs. par of +9 also set at Tall Grass in 2015.

Individually, Hugo Almeida set or tied three school records over the two days of play.  After shooting a 74 on the first day with four birdies and nine pars, Almeida was on fire for the second round, with five birdies and 11 pars resulting in a score of 69, tying the school record for lowest round, last set by teammate Rogelio Gerena last season at the Pull the Pin Invitational in October 2025.

Almeida's score of 69 was three under par, breaking the school record for low round vs. par (-2 by Gerena las year).  The round also gave him a 36-hole final score of 143, breaking the old school record for low 36-hole score of 144 set by Blaise Straka in the spring of 2015.  Almeida finished six strokes off the pace in eighth place overall.

Gerena and Andrew Brendlinger finished ten strokes behind Almeida with 36-hole scores of 153, tying for 43rd place among the 85 golfers competing.  Gerena had six birdies and 18 pars over the two rounds while Brendlinger had four birdies and 18 pars.

Trevor Dendler finished tied for 48th place with a 36-hole score of 155 with five total birdies and 17 pars.  Kiefer Sharman rounded out the Griffins five competitors with a score of 157 (four birdies, 18 pars).

The men's gold team returns to action on September 12th when they begin competition at the Bloomsburg Invitational in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
