One of the most accomplished players in Chestnut Hill College baseball history, Michael McLaughlin joined Head Coach Robert Spratt’s staff as an assistant immediately following a standout four-year career with the scarlet and gold (2012-2015). The strong-armed outfielder left the program as the all-time leader in stolen bases (75) and doubles (29) and second all-time in hits (168).
An impact player from the get-go, McLaughlin started 37 games as a freshman, part of 155 starts over his career (tied for second all-time). Finding his place at the top of the lineup, McLaughlin led the Griffins in runs (31) while carrying a .254 (45-for-177) batting average and stealing 19 bases (19-for-22, .864) as a sophomore in 2013. He also paced the squad in extra-base hits, recording a team-high ten doubles and a triple to help plate 19 runs (19 RBI) over 46 starts in right field.
After another strong campaign as a junior, McLaughlin turned in a spectacular senior swan song, helping to lead Chestnut Hill College to its second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) championship appearance in three years. McLaughlin served as the Griffins’ pace-setter in batting average (.353, 49-for-139), hits (49), runs-batted-in (RBI, 29), and stolen bases (23-of-27, 85.2%) with his average serving as the program’s second-best single-season effort; his RBI and steal totals ranked third all-time and his 49 hits were fourth. He offered eight doubles, two triples, and his first two collegiate home runs to post a .482 slugging percentage, and he scored 29 runs after walking six times for a .388 on-base percentage. At season’s end, McLaughlin was an All-CACC Second Team selection and the Coach’s Award winner.
At the conclusion of his career, McLaughlin stands as the school’s all-time leader in at-bats (586). He ranks second in games played (158) and hits (168), third in runs scored (102) and total bases (211), fifth in RBI (72), tied for eighth in triples (4), ninth in batting average (.287), tied for ninth in walks (43), and tied for tenth in home runs (2).
A quality student-athlete, McLaughlin also earned recognition on the Fall 2014 Chestnut Hill College Athletics Academic Honor Roll.
McLaughlin spent six months (December 2014-May 2015) acting as the Assistant Communications Director for Philadelphia-based Cupid’s Charities, playing a key role in strategy development and project management as well as promoting the organization via social media. He also served on the leadership council for Team IMPACT, helping to support honorary Griffin Owen Frenia.
McLaughlin graduated from Chestnut Hill College in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in communications. He currently resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Â
