Martines Debut Draws CACC Rookie of the Week Accolade
 
New Haven, Conn. – (10/1/2014) – Turning heads at Philadelphia’s Belmont Plateau, Chestnut Hill College freshman Giancarlo Martines (Cherry Hill, N.J.) impressed in his collegiate debut as he ran the Griffins to their best finish (T2nd of 15, 84 points) in the Philadelphia Metro Championship with his 5th place finish (29:16). The effort drew the attention of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) office as well, earning Martines the league’s Rookie of the Week award.
 
On a fine sunny afternoon, it was the Chestnut Hill College men who shined, turning in their best-ever finish in the city championship with 84 points to tie for a second place finish out of 15 full squads. Martines was a surprise leader for the Griffins, who placed three runners among the top 15 finishers, sophomores Eric Barton (Colora, Md.) (10th, 30:29) and Samuel Mondello (14th, 30:53), and five among the top 35 participants, freshman Luis Cordero (Bunnell, Fla.) (29th, 32:57) and sophomore Christian Leary (West Babylon, N.Y.) (33rd, 33:19).
 
The men’s and women’s cross country team return to action next Saturday, October 4, at the Lehigh University’s Paul Short Invitational.
