Raia and Slagle Open Season On CACC Weekly Report
 
New Haven, Conn. - (2/25/2015) – Despite taking no decision out of nine superb innings of work at the Northeast Challenge, senior pitcher Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) recently claimed honors as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Pitcher of the Week after striking out 12 and allowing only two hits in an 6-1 (11) extra-inning affair versus Molloy College. Junior catcher Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) recorded two doubles and a run in that win and homered in the Griffins 9-8 victory over Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) to collect a mention on the league Honor Roll.
 
Raia opened the season in prime condition, going pitch-for-pitch in eight scoreless innings before a five-run 11^th put the Chestnut Hill College (2-2) out of reach, 6-1. He was dominant in nine innings of work as the Griffin ace struck out 12 while only allowing two hits, but he figured into the no decision with sophomore outfielder Christopher Newman (Hammonton, N.J.), junior outfielder Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.), and junior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) coming through in extra frames.
 
Chestnut Hill College finished Saturday, February 21, with a 2-1 record thanks to a 9-8 victory over SCSU (2-3). The Owls posted a 2-0 lead after their first inning of the day’s second competition. It was quickly erased after back-to-back, second-inning singles from sophomore centerfielder Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) and Craig, 2-2, but it was only the start of a highly-competitive contest. The Owls reestablished their lead with a three-run second inning, 5-2, only to have the Griffins steal the advantage with Slagle’s third-inning solo shot, 5-3, and sixth-inning, three-run home run from junior left fielder Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.), 6-5. The Owls tied the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning, 6-6, and the Griffins regained the edge once again with run with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly from Campion, 7-6. Thankfully, the Griffin lead advanced to 9-6 in the ninth inning with self-manufactured runs from Koehler and Craig providing the cushion for sophomore pitcher Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) to record his first save (1) of the season.
 
Regrettably, the Griffins stay in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, ended with a demoralizing 12-0 loss to Stonehill College and a series of rain storms cancelling contests in Milledgeville, Georgia. Upon return home, the baseball team will travel to New York, New York, on Thursday, March 5, for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Pace University.
