Craig Tabbed Rookie of the Week; Looby Makes Honor Roll

New Haven, Conn. - (3/16/2015) – Desperate to resume its season after a two-week layoff, the Chestnut Hill College baseball team Le Moyne College met at Father Judge High School's Ramp Park Field to battle each other and the elements. Leadoff hitter, junior left fielder Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) batted twice in the first inning, doubling in three runs on his second chance at bat to put the exclamation point on a seven-run first inning that powered the Griffins to an 11-5 victory in their unofficial home opener. That was enough for an Honor Roll mention on this week’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Report. Freshman infielder Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) was honored as the league’s Rookie of the Week after scoring one run and driving in another.

The pitching staffs allowed a combined 24 walks in a six-hit affair that saw Chestnut Hill College (3-2) score seven first-inning runs before keeping pace with Le Moyne College (3-6) in the later innings. The Griffins managed to get through the top of the first unscathed, but the Dolphins were not as lucky. After a lead-off walk to Looby, a slow chopper to third from junior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) put two on with no outs. A succeeding walk to senior right fielder Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) loaded the bases for two one-out walks to bring home the first runs of the game, 2-0. Five more would follow for Chestnut Hill College, who added to their advantage with a botched play at the plate, another walk to Craig, and Looby's double to right field, 7-0.

The Dolphins put a run on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, 7-1, and fifth inning, 7-2, but they were quickly negated with the Griffins scoring two fifth-inning runs on the effort of two lead-off walks, 9-2. But the Dolphins matched that, leading off the sixth inning with two walks that eventually became runs on the following triple from junior second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), 9-4. The third Dolphin came home on a sacrifice fly, 9-5, but in the bottom of the frame the Griffins answered again with Looby scoring after his lead-off double, a series of wild pitches, and walks, 11-5.

Looby finished with a 2-for-3 afternoon, reaching base for a third time with a walk and scoring a pair of runs. Craig crossed the plate on Looby’s bases-clearing two-bagger in the first frame.

Chestnut Hill College was back in action this afternoon, taking on Nyack College in their CACC opening double-header.
