Sibson and McLaughlin Merit CACC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition

New Haven, Conn. - (4/21/2015) – Playing their role in three more wins, freshman pitcher Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) and senior outfielder Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) both earned a mention on this week’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Honor Roll. Sibson tossed a one hitter in the first of two wins at Briarcliffe College while McLaughlin went 5-for-7 with three runs, two runs-batter-in (RBI), and three stolen bases over the three game stretch.

In a hard-hitting CACC contest, Chestnut Hill College made Philadelphia University pay for a poorly timed fifth-inning error that allowed the Griffins to plate four runs in the frame at take the lead for good in a 12-8 final. All eight position players got at least a hit for the Griffins, who stole the advantage on a run-scoring single from freshman designated player Patrick Kelley (Pipersville, Pa.) and received plenty of insurance with late-inning damage from senior third baseman Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J.), junior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.), sophomore center fielder Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.), and McLaughlin.

Chestnut Hill College (23-9, 13-4) put the first runs on the scoreboard on Kelley's second-inning fielder's choice, 1-0, and a third-inning, two-out double from junior left fielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.), 2-0. Unfortunately, in the fourth inning a lead-off walk got the better of the Griffins as a succeeding single, and a two-out triple led to a four-run frame after an error extended a single run frame to much more, 4-2. But Philadelphia University (12-16) returned the favor after a lead-off beaning of freshman second baseman Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.), a Campion sacrifice, and a fielding error by the Ram pitcher that moved the runner to third, and resulted in four Chestnut Hill College runs with a single through the right side from junior catcher Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), a single up the middle from McLaughlin, and a two-out Kelley single, scored two more runs, 6-4.

The Griffins scored insurance runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, which would come in handy as the Rams offered resistance with two runs in the eighth and ninth innings. The late-inning scoring left the final score in the Griffins favor, 12-8, with an eighth-inning Campion home run standing out as the main highlight. McLaughlin had three hits in support of senior pitcher Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) who collected the win (5-1), allowing one earned run on four hits, three walks, and eight strikeouts.

After sitting out the first game at Briarcliffe College, McLaughlin singled in his first two at-bats of the second game at PAL Stadium. He stole two bases after his first single, but failed to score in the second inning. He did reach home after his second single, first stealing second base before senior shortstop Preston Koehler (Bath, Pa.) batted him home in the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly in the fifth inning accounted for his RBI.

Sibson took care of the Griffins first game with the Bulldogs on April 18, as the freshman right hander held the home team to one hit and three walks over seven innings of scoreless baseball. It was his second complete-game shutout, bringing his season win total to four (4-0) and lowering his current Earned Run Average (ERA) to 2.12.

The baseball team completes their CACC season series with Philadelphia University today, Tuesday, April 21, as they visit Alumni Field for a 2:30 p.m. game versus the Rams.
