Martines’ Title Run, Impressive Debut by Lopez Earn CACC Recognition
 
New Haven, Conn. - (9/15/2015) – Sophomore Giancarlo Martines (Cherry Hill, N.J.) of the Chestnut Hill College men’s cross country team started the 2015 campaign with a bang, crossing the line first overall with a time of 28:01.7 at the Philadelphia Metro Meet. Freshman Raquel Lopez (East Meadow, N.Y.) of the women’s squad, meanwhile, ran to a fifth-place showing (21:29.0) on the women’s side in her Griffin debut. For their impressive efforts at Belmont Plateau on Saturday, both were recognized on the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Report; Martines was honored as the league’s co-Runner of the Week, while Lopez garnered an Honor Roll mention.
 
Lopez’s strong showing paced the Griffins to a matching fifth-place finish (152 points) among a 15-team field in the five-kilometer course (5K). For Chestnut Hill College, sophomore Paige Antall (Hanover Township, Pa.) was next behind Lopez with a 21st place (22:26.1) finish, behind her came freshman Allison Heuwetter (Iselin, N.J.) in 34th (23:12.1), freshman Erica Dukleth (Murrieta, Calif.) in 37th (23:21.5), freshman Erica Waleski (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) in 55th (24:53.6), and freshman Makenzie Hooven (Philadelphia, Pa.) in 68th (26:06.7).
 
Martines was followed closely by a host of Franklin Pierce University runners, who provided the second, third, fifth, and sixth place finishers in the 8K. The fastest among them was senior Colton Ham (Webster, N.H.), who ran a nearly a full 14 seconds behind Martines (1st, 28:15.5). Junior Eric Barton (Colora, Md.) was the next Griffin across the finish line with his time of 30:18.0 placing 17th. Behind him ran senior Daniel Repsik (Haddonfield, N.J.) (31st, 31:55.6), senior Manon Purnell (Philadelphia, Pa.) (63rd, 36:37.1), freshman Ediegeo Vanterpool (Clementon, N.J.) (86th, 42:36.8), and freshman David Flores (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (94th, 49:29.4).

The Chestnut Hill College men's and women's cross country teams run next at the Bill Fritz/Charlie Way Invitational, which is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at Rowan College.
