Griffin Trio Appears On CACC Baseball Weekly Honor Roll

New Haven, Conn. – (3/1/2016) – Recognized for their performance in the first four games of the season, senior pitcher Zachary Crim (Horsham, Pa.), junior outfielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.), and freshman shortstop Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) all appeared on the second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Weekly Honor Roll. In the Griffins’ season-opener, Crim took the no decision despite limiting Molloy College to one earned run on six hits and two walks; he struck out three in seven innings of work. Monaghan finished the four-game stint at the Northeast Challenge with seven hits (7-for-16, .438), including a 4-for-5, three runs-batted-in (RBI) performance against Stonehill College. Szumigala was 3-for-6 between a two-run double versus Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) and a two hit effort in the finale opposite Stonehill College.

Another spring of Chestnut Hill College baseball began on Friday, February 26, as the Griffins returned once again to the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for a two days of competition in the Northeast Challenge. A pair of hits from senior first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) and a run-scoring fielder’s choice from junior shortstop Jonathan Baturgil (Freehold, N.J.) highlighted the Griffins’ effort in the first game, versus Molloy College, who won the late afternoon affair by a 4-2 margin. The Scarlet and Gold bats awoke in the nightcap as both Campion and senior catcher Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) homered to compliment a three-hit performance from Baturgil in a 10-2 triumph over the University of New Haven (UNH). Monaghan was 2-for-4 with two runs, a double, and a walk.

With a seven-run second inning, Chestnut Hill College in good standing, 7-1, in Saturday's Northeast Challenge clash with SCSU. But a rough patch of middle innings knocked sophomore pitcher Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) from the game and paved the way for a 12-8 Owl victory. Three Griffins, including Szumigala, brought home two runs apiece while second baseman Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) recorded his multi-hit performance of sophomore season.

In the finale, opposite Stonehill College, the Griffins rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to trail 3-1 after the third inning, 5-1 after five innings, 5-2 after six innings, and 5-4 after seven innings, before tying the contest at 6-6 on a ninth-inning, two-run home run from senior outfielder Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.). Unfortunately, a pair of hits and a couple hit batsmen gave the Shyhawks a 7-6 walk-off win. Mongahan singled in the first inning and singled home a run in the third inning before connecting for a two-run triple in the seventh inning. He also singled in the ninth inning to score on Looby’s two-run homer.

The Chestnut Hill College baseball team continues their spring trip competition on Tuesday, March 1, with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Barry University.
