Chestnut Hill College Sweeps Golden Rams in Tennis Doubleheader

Philadelphia, PA – (10/2/2010) – A day after cleaning the courts from the flood waters of the Wissahickon Creek; Chestnut Hill College hosted West Chester University in an afternoon of tennis competition. The Griffins swept the doubleheader, taking the women's match 6-3 and the men's match 5-4.

 

Chestnut Hill College got out to a strong start in both matches, taking the top two doubles flights on both sides. Sophomore Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and freshman Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, OH) won women's number one doubles 8-5, while senior Mario Gutierez (Malaga, Spain) and junior Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA) won by the same score in the men's number one doubles match, 8-5. Sophomores Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) and Danielle Knott (Mt. Vernon, NY) won 8-3 in the women's number two doubles, as did freshmen Juan Farah (Caracas, Venezuela) and Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) in men's competition, 8-5. West Chester University won number three doubles in both men's and women's play.

 

Singles play is where the matches differed. The Chestnut Hill College (6-4) women took four of six singles matches for a 6-3 win. Shcherbakova took number one singles 6-4, 6-0. Dennis won number two singles 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. At number three singles, Parapouras played to a 6-1, 7-5 victory while Knott claimed number four singles 6-1, 6-2. West Chester University (2-2) the final two singles matches, 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-0, respectively.

 

The men's team claimed individual victories at number one, three, and four singles, which was enough to defeat the Golden Rams, 5-4. Gutierrez won number one singles 6-4, 6-2. West Chester (4-3) took number two doubles 6-4, 6-1, but Ceniceros answered with a 6-0, 6-3 win at number three singles. Twyman won the final point for Chestnut Hill College (3-2), taking number four singles 6-3, 6-2. The Golden Rams won number five singles (6-3, 7-6 (8-6)) and number six singles (6-2, 6-0).

 

The men's tennis will resume play in the spring, while the women's tennis team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule with a 4:00 p.m. match at Holy Family University on Wednesday, October 6.
