Griffins Edge Firebirds in Men’s Tennis

Philadelphia, PA – (3/20/2010) – Chestnut Hill College grabbed a narrow 5-4 victory over the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) thanks to a strong showing in singles play. Trailing 2-1 heading to individual play, the Griffins rallied to take the bottom three, singles matches handedly while sophomore Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA) scored a comeback victory at number three singles to make the difference.

 

Twyman dropped the first set to senior Adrian Wyllie (Kingston, St. Vincent) 6-3, but he recovered in the final two sets to win number three singles 6-2, 6-3. Chestnut Hill College (5-4) also received individual victories in singles flights four through six, as sophomore David Negron (Philadelphia, PA), freshman John Reading (Phoenixville, PA), and sophomore Adrian Avena (Vineland, N.J.) all scored individual victories.

 

Negron and Avena recorded the Griffins' lone doubles win. They defeated senior Daniel Gourdine (Silver Spring, MD) and junior Karlon Bernard (Scarborough, Trinidad & Tabago) of UDC (1-2) 8-2 at number three doubles.

 

The men's tennis team opens their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a 3:00 p.m. road match at the University of the Sciences on Thursday, March 25.
