Philadelphia, PA – (3/25/2010) – Three singles matches required a tie-breaker or third set as Chestnut Hill College (6-4, 1-0) battled the University of the Sciences (USIP) in this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener. The Griffins scored points in the bottom two doubles matches before closing out the Devils 6-3 with hard-fought wins at one, two, and five singles.
USIP (0-5, 0-1) took number one doubles 9-8 (7-5), but Chestnut Hill College (6-4, 1-0) took a 2-1 lead into individual play with wins at number two and three doubles. Sophomore Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA) and junior Carson Richter (Lafayette Hill, PA) won 8-6 at number two doubles while sophomores David Negron (Philadelphia, PA) and Adrian Avena (Vineland, NJ) also secured an 8-6 victory at number three doubles.
Singles play was extremely competitive between the local conference rivals. In the top flight, freshman Joe Boyle (Doylestown, PA) defeated junior Francisco Garcia (Buenos Aires, Argentina) 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 11-9 setting the tone and scoring a point for the Griffins. Freshman Pat Joson (Old Bridge, NJ) won number two singles in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and Twyman took number three singles 6-2, 6-4. The Devils grabbed a singles win at number four, as sophomore William Fine (West Chester, PA) topped Negron 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Avena came away with a win at number five singles, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) while the Devils claimed the final individual match, taking number six singles by default.
The men's tennis travels to Queens College on Friday, March 26 as the face the Knights next in a 12:00 p.m. match.
